After your 22?

After my 10/22 came a 7.7 Jap Model 99 Ariska +13 rounds +7 brass was $7 + a pack of Camels. Why, it was $7 and I had a whole carton, it was 1970something

I, too, started with other guns. 12 ga Mossberg 500 was the first, next was CZ97, then Ruger M77 308, then another mossberg, and finally came the 452. There have been more guns purchased since then, but I don't feel like I need another 22LR. The 452 is just too much fun with the irons. :) That said, I did acquire a Marlin 99C project. As soon as I get a little extra spending money, I am giving Numrich a call and getting new internals for it and some sort of corrosion protection.

This won't count, being a middle-aged guy.

Seldom used the very old (40's) Savage .22, but in October '07 suddenly caught gun fever. The M-1 Carbine was only the first of a series.
The lastest group consists of three Lee-Enfields (#4/#5:)) and the Yugo Mauser 48A.

Was given a Marlin 49DL .22 when I was 15. Next gun purchase was a Marlin .357mag lever gun when I was 23 or so. Worst trade in my life was trading the Marlin lever for a High Standard Dura-Matic and a little cash a couple years later. Best trade was getting a Remington 1100 20ga for the Dura-Matic after that. Didn't have much interest in firearms for 10 years or so and then I bought a M1 Garand from CMP. Since then I've added a few....

Started with a Mossberg .22lr Plinkster a few months after turning 18, then when the next gun show came around I was thiiiiiiiiis close to buying a Mosin M44 w/ammo, but I didnt have the cash on me. Left the gunshow to go to an ATM and decided on the way out I didn't want the rifle. Stopped by a gun shop on the way home and picked up my first centerfire long gun, a NEF Parder Pump 12 gauge and saved about $100 over the M44.

AP:

Nope, sounded just fine. I do locate some good deals from time-to-time.

My first gun was a 12ga. J.C. Higgins bolt action tube fed shotgun. I paid the handsome price of $12.50 which included about 1/2 a box of assorted birdshot. Dad and I refinished the stock and reblued it. She sure looked purdy. My next gun was a Remington 514 single shot. What a tackdriver. Some scum stole it out of my truck years later.

Since I didn't have many resources for firearms at that time (15 years old), I bought a Mossberg 243 win rifle for both whitetail and wood chuck hunting as my first centerfire and second rifle. The choice depends on what you like to do with firearms. It might just be another 22 rifle of perhaps a higher quality than the one you have.

Well I went with a couple .22s and then a 17hmr, then I think it was a .243 savage. After that may have been the ar. From there it gets blurry. Shotguns were a bigge deal since most everything shot was done with a 12 gauge.

My first centerfire was a Savage 340 in 30-30 a long time ago. It was all I could afford at the time after I moved to where I could go deer hunting. It was absolutely the worst rifle I have ever owned. It wouldn't keep it's shots in a 12" circle at 100 yards. Thought I might get a close shot but that didn't happen. Got rid of it right after deer season and bought a 30/06 which I still have. Over the year I've owned a couple of other rifles that weren't too great but nothing quite as bad as that one.

A funny thing is that I read posts occasionally about what great rifles the 340s are. Savage must have made some huge improvements in them over the years. I wouldn't even consider purchasing another Savage because of that 340 until a couple of years ago. It is actually a Stevens 200 but it is a very accurate gun.

My first center fire was a Remington model 700 in 270 Win. Got it for Christmas when I was 15 - used it for deer hunting. Now my 16 year old son uses it for deer hunting.

The first center fire rifle I personally purchased was an SKS - still have it - and no matter what anyone says, it shoots like a dream.

I bought another .22lr. Then a .223, but it depends on what you plan to use it for. If you want to punch paper, a .223 or .308, if you want to hunt it depends on the game.

Mine is kind of reversed. My first gun is Mossberg 500 12Ga for home defense. Then I bought Remington 700 .308 with scope and bi-pod, Berretta 92, Sig P226 from a friend to help him financially. Then CZ75 9mm and recently Ruger 22/45 MkIII .22LR. Now eyeing for Henry .22LR, still debating to get a standard or Goldenboy. Next may looking into surplus for M1 Garand, Mauser 98, and Mauser C96.

After a .22LR I started shooting my dad's .303, 30-30 & 16 gauge. The next none 22 LR gun I bought was an SKS years later quickly followed by a Taurus 92 9mm. In the past 25 years, I have bought, owned & sold 100's...everything from a serious EBR & pistol phases. (Even a Desert Eagle in .44Mag)

That all said, I think the majority of us start with a 22 LR and ALL eventually come back to a 22 LR (I have several)...they are where the majority of us learned and honed our marksmanship. I still do. They are just to easy, inexpensive and pleasurable to shoot & hunt with.

My first centerfire was a .30-06 Savage 110, around 1960. It was the first model, with a low comb and it came back...HARD! I was 16 at the time and used it for woodchuck hunting, after getting a blank and making a stock similar to a Weatherby for it and epoxy-bedded/free-floated it. It then shot great!

The next centerfire was a Remington .22-250 700 ADL. I'm on my second one of those, but it's being rebarrelled to .243 Win in a couple of weeks. The .243 Win cartridge is more useful for what I do lately. The barrel is a Pac-Nor stainless super-match, bead-blasted, 24" barrel with Rem sporter contour.

Other Rem 700s I've had were in .30-06, .270 Win and 6mm Rem. I still have the .270, which is my deer and other larger-critter rifle.
