I just acquired a Marlin 60, which looks as if it suffered far more wear in the closet than on the range. Mechanically, it's like new, and I'd like to make it my one .22 rifle. But there's one problem: the factory sights, especially the rear, are utterly terrible. They make a stock '98 Mauser sights look good.

Does anyone know of any easily-installable aftermarket sights for these beasts? An adjustable peep sight would be great.

Thanks, all

Thank you. I will certainly check those sites. I bought about a six year-old used (far more stored than fired) rifle which sold for $100.00 from Wally World. I think it's the bottom of the line; cheap wood stock, blued metal.

Ok, but its of fairly recent manufacture which is important. Like I said, the walmart near me has 2 mod60s in the case. The first is the bottom line $100 model. The second is stainless and has noticeably better sights. They're still bent sheet metal but definitely better. I know that there is a replacement fiberoptic front sight for the 60, don't know about anything else other than parts you could probably order from marlin.

I'd check out Brownell's for William's and/or Marble's replacements. Should be a drop-in, or close enough to only require very minor fitting.

Williams used to make a line of receiver sights called the "Guide" that didn't need any drilling or tapping to install on most rifles. Some applications did need a somewhat higher front, but the Brownell's catalog includes a table for calculating the right one easily.

I have "Guide" sights on a Mini-30 and one of my 10/22s. The Mini works well with the stock front. The 10/22 needed a taller (0.570") front for the most range of adjustment. Both made a huge difference in speed of sight acquisition and accuracy.

Conventional "open" sights are available from both makers in several different styles.

Very reasonably priced, too. In the $30-40.00 range for most, IIRC.
