Aguila Standard Velocity is a rimfire value

That used to be the case, but they have recently changed their labeling from "Eley Primed" to "Aguila Primed". I hope that you are correct, but from what I have heard the jury is still out.
I'm glad you pointed this out. I have not had to buy ammo for a long time. I'm sure it's the same priming, just added their name.

Yes, the Aguila Standard Velocity would not reliably cycle the bolt on my Nylon 66 one cold winter morning. Before writing it off for semi-auto usage, I tried it in my accurate old Winchester 190. It ran like a top through that rifle, but it should; the barrel is marked "Longs or Long Rifles." If it's recoil spring is manufactured to handle the lower powered Longs then...
Most .22 semi autos are designed to run with hv ammo. Every now & then you will find one that will run with sv, but that is pretty uncommon.

That 541 is a beaut. Looked for one on and off over the years, but now the cost for one
is up where it should have always been for such a nice HB sporter.

Hey Danny, you seem to have a handle on your set ups, so I thought you
might share your process when seasoning the barrel to different brands of ammo when testing.

I haven't done much group shooting since quitting the rimfire benchrest game, but have a couple of very nice sporters. My 10-22 is scary-accurate, once shooting 10 consecutive 5-shot groups on a "Prove-It" target that averaged 0.37" at 50 yards.

We learned that when you find a very accurate batch of .22 ammo, mortgage the farm and buy as much as you can of that batch! :)

I have tried some of the Aguila primed Super Extra standard and high velocity lately in one rifle and two pistols. Overall it shoots well, but will throw random shots. Sometimes shoots a ragged hole though. You can't relay on the picture when buying, call them and confirm. Argh. I shot Blazer, Aguils S & H velocity, Auto Match, and Mini Mags through the guns. My S&W 41 hates Automatch, but my Trailside likes it. Accuracy wise that is, it functioned 100% in both. Blazer is good stuff IMHO. Mini Mags too, but the price goes up there.

I am no .22 LR expert by any means, so........ :)

My 597 and M60 ran fine on cci standards, no idea if the Aguila would have been ok (couldn't get it). Velocity is pretty similar so i assume they would have worked.
Thats a sample size of 2 but I think its atleast worth trying in a semi.... actually my buddies 10/22 ran the cci svs fine also, so sample size of 3.

My go-to 22 shells are usually CCI, Federal and Remington golden bullets but I shoot a little of everything that's available here locally but I haven't had the chance to try the Aguila yet, I'll definitely have to buy a few bricks @ Sportsman's Warehouse and check it out. I have a Ruger 10/22 but like my old 10/22 those are just fun plinking rifles. My go to Shooters are my mid 1930's Stevens Savage 87A clickety clack "Gill gun" & my early to mid 50's High Standard JC Higgins model #31. They're both Old Tube feeds chambered for the 22 short, 22 and 22 long rifle but they're the most accurate Shooters I've ever owned or seen without breaking the bank for an Uber expensive target rifle like a CZ or something. If you get the chance to pick one of these old style 20 twos up it might really surprise you and I like them much better than most all of the new production guns off the rack today.

I took my Savage Model 7 magazine fed Click Clack out last range day and ran a few mags of Aguila SE Standard Velocity through it without issue. It shot very well considering the rather crude rear sight. Ran some Federal Auto Match to test function and the rifle liked it too.

Awesome, the new high-end High $ guns might be really nice but I've always gravitated toward these cool old vintage shooters instead of breaking the bank for a target / varmint shooter. I had a beautiful Savage Stevens model #6A that I still kick myself in the proverbial but for letting go. It had a sweet 22 3_9x50 scope on it & when it was dialed into the ammo it would shoot ragged holes at 50 yards and close enough at 100 yards you couldn't complain about it.

I went on the hunt for a another one to replace it and ended up finding my 87a which is basically a duplicate clone of the 6A. Luckily it's factory D&T'd for a r l on the side of the receiver as well as for peep sights on top of the receiver. No I just need to find a Rel that will fit it that I can put some rings on or a rail with 1 inch rings on it. I have a rail and Optics lined up for my 10/22 and my high standard JC Higgins model 31 has a Japanese 3_9x50 Tasco on it, so it's time to get some glass setup for my clickety-clack :) ...

Thanks, JT.

As to seasoning barrels, it depends on the rifle and the ammo. For example, the Remington 541 takes about half a box to really settle in with an ammunition and more like a box when starting with a clean bore. Rifle smith Paul Voelker advised me to find an ammo it likes and "shoot it dirty." I seldom clean it's bore.

My eight CZ 452s? Five or ten rounds after changing to a different cartridge.

My CZ 513 Basic? None needed, an amazing idiosyncrasy of this rifle. Also, it never throws cold bore flyers.

My Anschutz? Five rounds.

By the way, if I'm changing from greasy/higher quality match ammo like Wolf or SK to a dryer cheap round like CCI Blazer or Aguila, I have found that the match-ammo-coated bore often carries over into higher performance for the cheap stuff for at least the first couple of groups.

I think really outrageous cold bore flyers are usually caused by a carbon fouling ring just ahead of the chamber. Scrub it the heck out of there with a quality brush, solvent, and bore-guided rod.

If I have a rough bore on an older rifle, I have had success with a fire lapping kit. Be careful though, this is like shock treatment. Use at your own risk and follow the directions to the letter. I have read of varying results and some smiths hate them. I suggest you only consider fire lapping when you can ask, "What have I got to lose?"

I've been wanting to try some of this forever. My favorite ammo is CCI standard and the comparible CCI subsonic, which as near as I can tell is the same ammo with a HP bullet. They both cycle my semi autos reliably whereas other standard velocity ammo doesn't. My favorite and most accurate bulk ammo is blazers and golden bullets. Never had any luck with federal, especially auto match. Federal should be fined for false advertising with that name.

My Marlin 60 and Ruger 10-22 both shoot Aguila Match Rifle and Wolf Match Extra almost equally well . I get slightly better groups with the Wolf , but it sometimes fails to cycle the bolt on the old Marlin and it is more accurate than the 10-22 with those brands of .22 ammo .

That's a nice looking CZ , I have a 452 American that I have never shoot yet . I bought it about 4 or 5 years ago when I heard CZ has going to discontinue them . I see they still make a few every now and then still .

Thanks, I know they are getting harder to find new.
That's a beautiful 541T-HB. I had one that got away--kinda wish I still had it. Good shooting!
Thanks, it’s a keeper.
