So, just won a GB auction for a Savage340 in 222 Remington. It was a lowball bid on a no reserve auction that I thought would never make it and I only bid because I don't have a 22 Cal centerfire rifle.

Soooooo, input, comments, lambasts, arcane details etc., on the .222 Rem cartridge and the Savage 340 (I have shot one in 30-30 before and thought, "ok"). In any event, appreciate your input.

The .222 Remington is the most inherently accurate 22 caliber centerfire cartridge. It ruled the benchrest world for years until it was replaced by the 6mmPPC. It is very forgiving for the reloader and easy to get great success with. It is has been said to be a scaled down to 22 caliber 30-06. As an added bonus it is a lot quieter than a .223 .

Superb little round. Easily reloaded for, extremely accurate (was benchrest champion for many years). Likes under 52 grain bullets.
An under 250 yard varmint round without peer.
You won a rifle in a really really fine chambering. Now you
can go out and embarrass your friends with how accurate your new
rifle is.

Well, this is good news. I bid on the vague recollection that the 222 was a fine round but had fallen on hard times. Glad to hear it is alive and well, and an easy reload. But especially to hear that it isn't as loud as the 223!
