I received in mail today a copy of PREDATOR.

I'm working on sighting-in both a stevens .223 using 55 gr v-max and ss109 and 30-06 with 130 gr speer bullets using varget.

I read.

I've always tried to sight in about two inches high at 100 yards.

Here's 1966 data for 30-06

with 130 gr hp data

And similar 1982 data

for the 130 hp

Main interest is with a .223 with the ballistic coefficient of .225.

My first guess is to try to sight the .223 in about 3 inches high at 100 yards.

Comments?

The first cartridge I reloaded was the .223. I used to have a Ruger #3.

I worked up two loads, one for a 40 grain sierra gameking and the other for a 50 grain vmax.

I took the Chuck Hawks approach to using the "point blank" range of the round.

I could sight in at one inch high at 100 yards and come in 1.5 inches low at 235 yards with each of the loads I worked up. These were a bit over 3000 fps but not destructive to the brass.

Knowing the arc of your round is good but I preferred getting it to shoot as flat as possible and used it within those limitations. I also found that having a fairly long throat would allow you to get the speed up at a slight loss of precise accuracy but I was never target shooting anyway. The Ruger #3 had a fairly long throat (I think from erosion) but it never really hurt it.

I have a .204 ruger for out to 300 yards and a .243AI for heavier critters. Both have nice flat shooting rounds worked up for them.

I have always been taught to shoot at the ranges you will hunt at so you have a good idea of where the bullets impacts. There are many varibles such as wind, light, shooting up/down and position.

Took me way too long to learn it, but that advice about sighting in for the range you will be shooting most of your game at is very very important. Have blown hair off of too many a buck's back! My deer rifle is sighted in at exactly 65 yards. My 30-06 165 grain boat tail handloads are on at that range and they are also ON at exactly 350 yards when I use the step of the duplex crosshair of my FIXED 6x40 Bushnell Scopechief to sight with. KNOW YOUR RIFLE AND LOAD!
