I have a Vortex SPARC red dot currently on my AR, but I've been thinking about upgrading to a used Aimpoint Comp M2 on Craigslist for around $400. Is it worth it? I'm not kicking down doors in Kandahar, so bomb-blast-surviving durability (besides waterproofing, which the Vortex is already very good with) isn't an issue. Thanks in advance for your advice!

You can pick up a brand new PRO for 445 all day long with free shipping from most web sites. If the m2 you are looking at has a mount with it, you might be saving 100 bucks depending on the mount.

Depending on the condition and whether it comes with a mount or not, that can be a good deal. However, towgunner is right. You can get a brand new Aimpoint PRO for under $430. This way you don't have to worry about what you are actually receiving. The PRO has virtually the same specs at the M2. I was issues an M68 (Comp M2) while in the Army and currently run the PRO on my M4 carbine. The PRO is every bit as good as my old M68 was.

One nice thing about the PRO over the Comp M2 is that the PRO has an extended battery life. The M2 is rated at 10,000 hours and the PRO is rated at 30,000. Guntalk showed how many batteries one would purchase if owning / operating another sight and the cost of batteries would have bought you another sight!

If your heart is set on the M2, for $400, i'd only purchase it if it was mint condition. We sell used M2's for less than that.

Ever since the PRO was introduced sell only a handful of M2's a year.

Samplelist.com has a Comp ML3 for $480. The PRO is the better sight, I think it is the same as the Comp C3 but with night vision capability. However, I see used M2s for $250-$350 often on various sites and locally so $400 seems a bit much to me.

Sent via smoke signal. Carrier pigeon on windy days.

I just picked up an Aimpoint PRO for $400.00 , free shipping. I took it to the range yesterday, zeroed it @ 50 yrds . I shot about 100 rounds from my AR 15 @ 50 and 100 yrds. I like it :)

My PRO was purchased locally for $400. For that matter, why not spend the extra few bucks and get an H-1? Mine was $450 locally, I believe they are up to $460 now. To me the extra money was worth the size and weight savings. As to your original question, I wouldn't pay $400 for a used M2 when that's what a new PRO costs.
