There's a truely bad ass male cat giving my little neutered back yard guys a hard time. They live in fear that this Mafioso-Type bully is going to show up to "Wet His Beak" by stealing their food and beating them up..which he does damn near every day.

My cats have an idealic, wooded, feline wonderland they can't fully enjoy because of having to look over their shoulders for "No Tail" (muscular, street-wise, bad ass S.O.B.) to show up, give them and pounding and steal their grub.

Humane trap won't work..I just get my little dudes. Weighted net over the food dish is too slow (No Tail is smart). I've concluded a sniper shot from a good air rifle when the wind is right is the Only answer.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good, .177 air rifle capable of dispatching No Tail to Cat Hell or sting his rump so bad he won't return?

Accurate to 20 - 25 yards is a must. Willing to spend no more than $100.

Many Thanks In Advance

Remington subsonics out of a 22 rifle is your friend. They actually make less noise than a high velocity air rifle, and will dispatch a cat humanely. If that does not work, and use this carefully because you don't want to get something else. Get a can of sardines, make a small hole in it, let it sit in the sun for 3 days, and then open it up and leave it where this cat, and only this cat, can get to it. This will now be a can of the most toxic botulism you can dream off, and need to be handled with gloves. Never used this myself, but the farmers in South Africa used it to kill jackal, and it was much more effective than strychnine, and did not linger around for years.

I had this cat from hell that terrorized me for 3 years. He looked like that cat from Pet sematary. Would sit outside my window at 3 am and screech, or run around on my roof, or pester my dogs by sitting on the fence, and scratch up my car if I left it outside. One morning just before I left for work, I heard my little minpins bark, and they cornered this cat in a bush. I had the 22 loaded for just such an opportunity, and it only took 1 shot, a large black plastic bag, a dumpster on the way to work, and the cat problem was permanently taken care off. Don't tell anybody, because you don't want your neighbors to be your enemy, or call the cops on you.

When we called coyotes in AZ, we left the dogs alone that we encountered in the field unless they acted aggressively, but any cat out in the wilds got shot, or at least shot at. Some of them were too smart and mean to kill. I once almost got bowled over by two Rottweilers out calling, but they had collars on, and did not act mean, just curious, and I just chased them off and moved a couple of miles.

As above... If you have a .22 Try CB or BB caps. Easy to find LOW noise.
Just enough punch for a Cat.

Crossman makes a fine Air pump, if memory serves I think it's called the 760

Daisey has their Air entry, the 880, both will spit out a BB/Pellet at warp speed with 10 pumps. I used to crank my 880 well above the 10 pump mark (not advisable)
and drill Squirrels at 25 yards. They dropped like a stone.

With a cheap scope, either rifle will easily hit a dime at 25 yards.

Great for target practice too, 2-3 pumps in the basement. I put up a box filled with rags for a backstop. Shake out the rags in a bucket and recycle the BB's.

I really appreciate the info! I checked on Aguila and CCI subsonics as well while on line. Some say those are good.

Need the quietest available as I live in the 'burbs with neighbors. I'll need a 22 as well. Not a problem, as I've had that in the back of my mind for a while and understand they can be very affordable.

Can anyone suggest (1) a cheap 22 (2) quietest subsonic for my situation and (3)a cheap scope?

I should have mentioned that I've only got one good arm and can't really pump up an air rifle to the needed speed. I've heard of gas..but am not familier with those.

At any rate, thanks for the help and any further input would be greatly appreciated!

CCI CB ammo is very quiet. There are too many .22 rifles to choose from...

Man, that's a fact! I went to Gunbroker and found a Marlin Model 60 (good name) with a BSA r3-7x20 scope for $69. Sounds like a good deal.

Just realized I'm out of the "Non Fire Arms" catagory, so I'll say thanks before I get tossed!

If legal, .22 CB cap (CCI makes some), which is a .22 rimfire with an absolutely minimal powder charge, out of a long barrel rifle. Will not cycle an autoloader, but will work fine in a bolt or lever action rifle.

As I read you guys posts I'm checking on line and looks like Aguila .22 Collibri and the .22 CB cap from CCI are the best for a situation like mine. You say rimfire...does that limit my choice of 22's? I'm trying to find one with a cheap scope.

Again, apprciate everyone's help!

You say rimfire...does that limit my choice of 22's?

For our purposes, .22 == rimfire.

If legal in your situation, to use the CB caps, you want a tube fed lever action or tube (if they exist) or magazine fed bolt action .22. The verbiage on the side of the gun barrel will say it's for ".22 Short, Long and Long Rifle". A single shot rifle, like unto the NEF break action guns, would also work.

Your choice of .22 rifles is limited to these because the CB does not have the oomph to cycle an autoloader's action.

But, you know, there's also paintball. Or a wrist rocket type slingshot.

That is very useful information. I'm a handgunner and a stranger to this aspect of "target" sport. I've created a file folder with all responses, and feel I'm now armed with the intel required for the task at hand...who knows, I may become hooked on .22's as I am on wheel guns!

Many thanks..

Johnny

If it will be legal, go with a cheap .22 rf rifle. You should be able to get a used one for under a hundred bucks with a scope. To get an air rifle powerful enough for a bad-cat is going to cost much more. Like 400-600 bucks, and any air rifle powerful enough will probably be a bit louder than a bolt action .22 rimfire with cb's. You should be able to find cci brand "cb long" ammo, they have a tiny puff of powder and a little round nose bullet. CCI also makes "CCI SUBSONIC" .22 that are much more powerful, hollowpointed, and also quiet, about as loud as slamming a car door, if that.

For a really cheap solution go round up a wrist-rocket slingshot, the kind with the arm brace, one of those with some big steel bearing will settle his hash.

Get Rid of That Cat

Here's what worked for me....an ultrasonic beeper. Twenty bucks on ebay. it sends out a 20,000-25,000 hz 135db signal that hurts a cat or dogs ears and makes them want to leave immediately. A couple of blasts usually does it. Now, if they only made one for in laws.

Ah, but he's got his own kitties.

If you only want to detour the unwelcome guest then I would suggest a Sheridan 5mm air rifle, two pumps 5-15yds or three pumps 15-30yrds . practice 1st to know your elevations. Shoot as slow(velocity)as you can, cat's have thin skin and a shot to the rump could turn fatal from lead poisoning. Maybe someone makes a rubber pellet ? accuracy ?
That gave me a idea, what about a paint ball gun ?

I have the perfect non-lethal solution. It's called a paintball gun. I use mine for everything, except playing paintball. Horse leaning on a fence, they get a paintball. Dogs growling at eachother, they get a paintball. Grilfriend nagging me... well, you get the picture. I even use it for taking out yellow jacket nests and wiping out the tent caterpillars in the fruit trees. Anyway, back to the point. Every animal I have ever shot, except 1 dog, have always learned very quickly and accosiated thier bad behavior with a paintball in the a$$. That 1 dog just seems to enjoy getting shot and always eats the un-broken paintballs. Anyway, try it, it may work very well and its a lot less hassle.

If you can you put your critters up for a day so that they don't have to deal with Mr. Tuffpaws you may be able to get rid of him. Do this a couple of times during the week with the live trap out and the food in it, but not set to catch. On the 3rd day do it all again, but this time set the trap to catch. Odds are Mr. Tuffpaws will be found in the trap and he can be delivered to Animal Control for removal from the gene pool.

And with that suggestion, we're done with this one.
