Airport Style Security and Preventing Mass Shootings

Remember this one?
Officials said the incident began on the ground floor of the Capitol before 4 p.m., just inside a ground-level entrance where people must walk through metal detectors.

The shooting started after the gunman entered and magnetometer alarms went off. The man, armed with a handgun, opened fire as he ran toward the office of Texas Republican Rep. Tom DeLay. When the man got to DeLay's office, he allegedly got into a gunfight with a security guard there.

Two officers died, a female tourist and the gunman were injured. The House was in session and the Senate had just finished for the day. The white-domed building was filled with tourists.

I would imagine that security at the Capitol is quite a bit more than a few steps above any mall security team.

My son and I went to the Titans game Sunday and there were tens of thousands of people waiting at the gate turnstiles where a cursory frisk (a Desert Eagle or even larger would’ve been no problem) was taking place on each and every patron. A drive-by at a range of 15-20 feet would be horrendous carnage.

Nothing but feel-good, placebo measures which do nothing to deter determined criminals. :banghead:

There is nothing we can do to prevent the VT, Omaha and YWAM/NL type atrocities. A killer who is willing to sacrifice his own life will inevitably take others with him.
That is one of the costs of freedom.
But as we all know, and as Jeanne Assam proved to the world, armed citizens can limit the amount of damage such evil people will inflict.
And that is one of the benefits of freedom.
