AK-47 or AK-74 or any other gun

The Ruger Mini-14 would be a great first gun (as long as you only use Ruger-brand magazines) and is within the OP's price range:

If you want to use 7.62x39, the nearly-identical Ruger Mini-30 can also be found for under $500:

These are both high-quality American-made firearms that won't disappoint you with the shoddy sort of craftsmanship found on many AKs and other surplus guns.

I'm sorry, but they're not. IO is using a legal loophole to (legally) misrepresent the fact that the majority of the gun is made from foreign parts.

The 922r law allows this to happen.

Don't be fooled - IO's guns only have the 5 or 6 required US parts to "legally" call them "US made". They are made from AK parts kits, just like the majority of the other AKs out there.
Wait a minute. Their barrels are made in USA by mossberg, all the furniture and fire controls are USA made, and the receiver is USA made. That leaves the dust cover, a few internals, the trunion, and the front site. That's pretty "made in usa" if you ask me. Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of that.

The only thing remotely verifiable that is made in the US on IO AKs seem to be:
-buttstock
-handguards (upper and lower = one part)
-trigger (tapco G2, most likely)
-barrel
-receiver
-grip

that is six parts, which is the minimum needed to be swapped in order to comply with 922 restrictions.

parts on an AK that aren't US-made could be any/all of the following:
-the entire bolt, carrier, and piston
-the mag latch
-rear and front sights
-dust cover
-gas block
-receiver block
-gas tube
-any muzzle attachment
-recoil/reciprocating spring
-safety
-hammer springs, followers
-mags (yes, mags count also as a compliance part)

I could be missing something here, but the main thing is that, aside from the receiver, barrel, and the few trigger components themselves, there is a crap-load off an AK that could be foreign-made.

well i would get one but i want to go to the range and shoot in the 100 yrd target area..but i will buy a shotgun later

It isn't the shotgun that is stopping you from shooting at those ranges. I have personally witnessed cops using their 12 ga shotguns with slugs at that distance and hitting their target consistently.

I'd go for the 47 of the two you asked about. Ammo is more readily available.

if you want an ak, get an ak. stay away from wasr's they are junk with no resale value. a 74 with side folding stock and scope rail is a very nice gun. good mil surp optics can be had cheap. the 5.45 ammo is plentifull and cheaper than 7.62. the 5.45 is a very good round that imparts its energy in a target better tahn a .223. check out arsenal usa or other reputable ak manufacturers. polish tantals are also nice.

good luck and enjoy it!!!

Well, IO produces Kalashnikovs with varying parts makeup. Which model in particular are you referring to?

I know for a fact that the Stg-2000 and Stg-2003 have foreign barrels (they're basically fancy WASRS).

When you speak in generalities, I will speak to the lowest common denominator - some of their recent offerings (a small percentage) have US made barrels, as lots of vendors have gone to (as the barrel ban has dried up supplies).

The Inter Ordanance is $524 at " Bud's Guns .com "

I've seen them in person and they are nicely finished, smooth and good quality.
The Romanian ones are pure crapola !
They might not send you the 30 rd. mags. though, they are now banned in many states. :(

this is my next gun purchase b.t.w..
right now i have a Yugo M48 on layaway,mint cond.,never fired.....

I don't think an AK is a good choice for a first gun. You are going to be very dissapointed with its accuracy punching holes in paper at 100 yds. It is going to be expensive to shoot also.

Why not get a good .22. You could get a bolt action gun or a semi-auto and bricks of ammo for $500 and have a blast for hours upon hours of shooting. You could probably pick up a used mossburg pump 12ga as well within your budget. A 30/30 or .22 lever gun would also be more accurate, versitile, and fun IMHO.

Check out the prices to buy a few hundred rounds of the ammo for the gun you want. This will tell you how much fun you're able to have.

For a first gun, if you want an AK, an AK-74 lookalike (5.45x39mm) would be a better first gun than 7.62x39mm. The 5.45's are more accurate and have less recoil; 7.62x39mm AK's are easy to shoot badly.

They might not send you the 30 rd. mags. though, they are now banned in many states.
Not many. I believe the number of states that ban full-capacity magazines can be counted on one hand; CA, MA, NY, CT, and HI? There may be one or two more, at most.

J&G Sales has an AK+ammo sale going on that is decent.
WASR GP10/63M is $399.95 + $20 ship + FFL fee ($440 or so total).
WASR GP10/63M and 500 rounds of Brown Bear 7.62x39 is $499.90 + ship & FFL fee.
Other types are available also if one simply can't abide Romanian products.

There's nothing wrong with the WASR GP10/63 guns. Sure it is better if you can hand pick the one you buy, but they are not pure crapola.
Thousands of rounds after buying mine, it still runs great, cycles 100%, and does what I bought it for....hits the target at the 100 yard backstop where I shoot.

A few states ban 30 round mags. Probably more states ban mags over 30 rounds (40. 50. 75, drums). Ohio has a 30 round cutoff for centerfire (none for rimfire). If your state bans 30-round mags, there are the 20-round Hungarian AK tanker mags and 10-round single stack mags.
