AK-47: Pleez ejukate mee

I did not grow up around guns, so expect some stupid questions.

I'm thinking about getting an AK-47. I can pick up a Romanian SAR-1 (see attachment) for some relatively short dough, and I can get the ammo for about what I pay for 9mm @ Walmart. I still have a couple lingering questions:

1. Is this SAR-1 an AK-47? They look similar, why not the same letter/number?

2. Would I be better off getting some other manufacture? Would I be better off looking through the want ads? (FYI I live in MA)

3. I know my mileage may vary - But will I expect reliability issues using these with Wolf ammo?

4. Any pointers on websites to further my AK education?

because its not really an AK47, its a semiautomatic AK clone. (same design, just not select fire) SAR1 is just Century's model.

SAR's are fine, just try to get one w/out a canted front site

should be just fine. it's an AK after all. ive abused the hell out of mine, and they've all run fine.

While we're on the subject, my Romanian AK kit from Interordnance has the typical sliding do-hickey on the rear sight to adjust for different ranges. When the slider is all the way back, its at the 'P' position instead of a numbered range (the shortest of which is 200m, farthest is 1000m). Does anyone know what that P stands for? Is it the CQB/close range setting or something?

Maybe it stands for PUCKER. When the enemy is that close you have to bring the sight all the was down. :D
 
I think Wolf 7.62X39 has steel cases. I personally don't like the idea of steel-case ammo banging the bolt face and other areas. Try to find some cheap ammo with brass cases. It works just fine, it simply doesn't contribute to longevity. But, then, these rifles last virtually forever, so this is probably just a nit in this case.
 
1) Yes, SAR-1s are AKs. The AK is simply a design, and many manufacturers make versions of it. It's like the M-16...Colt, Armalite, Bushmaster, Olympic, DPMS, and others all make versions with different names, but that are essentially the same gun. Same with AKs - you've got Veprs, Saigas, SARs, MAKs, Maadis, Hungarian AMDs, and so on, but they're all (semiauto) AK-47s. The differences are in quality and a few details (just like AR-15 differences). Regarding the specific numbers on the SARs, they indicate caliber. A SAR-1 is in 7.62x39, a SAR-2 is in 5.45x39, and a SAR-3 is in .223.

2) You probably won't find many AKs cheaper than a Romanian SAR, and they're of reasonably good quality. I would avoid Egyptian Maadis. For a better (and higher-priced) gun, you should look into Veprs or Bulgarian 'Arsenal' rifles.

3) I had a MAK-90 for a while and used nothing but Wolf in it and had no problems. I really don't think you can hurt an AK just by using Wolf ammo. You might have failures to extract Wolf in an AR, but AKs seem to just eat the stuff up.
 
The odd thing is, the P setting doesnt put the sight at its lowest (the 200m setting does that), as the ramp the slider rides on curves upwards behind the 200m point.

Your AK should have a Rear Leaf sight that had a series of numbers on it. The Rear Leaf sight is used to set the distance (elevation) to the target in meters, which each number represented in hundreds, for example, a setting of 1 would be 100 meters, and a setting of 10 would 1000 meters. At the bottom of the leaf sight is a letter "P", your letter may be different, but this is the battle setting. The battle setting would be used during combat if you did not have time to figure out the range to the target, basically on this setting, with a correctly zeroed rifle you would be able to hit any target up to 1000 meters with a 16 inch circle or less.

I finally had my SAR1 jam this weekend. It took 2000 rounds w/o cleaning before it happened though.

I squirted some CLP into it and kept going

Don't own an AK but I've seen many people with them at ranges. I don't know why people have a fear of using steel ammo in AKs. I've seen them gobble stuff up I didn't think could be shot, by the box-full. No damage, kept on chugging. It might shave a few years off it but we are talking about the rusted-shut-gunked-with-dirt-and-radioactive-goop-gun-that-still-fires-like-it's-brand-new. ;)

The SAR-1 is the best bang for the buck. You won't find another AK that does anything this one doesn't. You should give the new laminated stock version a hard look:

Ak's, SKS's, Makarov's, Dragonov's, etc. are designed around steel cases.

All you're doing by shooting brass cases is spending more for ammunition.

I thought that AK's were designed to use steel cased ammo?

It could be just me not remembering correctly, but if my Ak can't handle Wolf ammo, then it ain't worth having, even at the inexpensive price point you can get one at.

I thought so as well, but MA is known for it's can-o-worms legislation. Maybe there is a grandfather-clause or something?

Either way, they sell them at the gun shop I go to in Woburn, and the shop is very careful about not breaking the law (at least as far as I can tell).
 
If you have a "Class A" license, you can have all the Hi-Caps you can afford. You can get an AK, AR, whatever.

30 and 40 round mags aren't enough, so I got a drum for my SAR. :evil:

MA guns laws are very different from the "other" antigun states (CA NJ or MD).
In some ways MA is worse, in others it's much better.
