I suspect if I had to carry it every day I would want the M14, because I would know I had something in my hands I could HIT with. I think I would prefer a synthetic stock too.

i thought the M14 would be top dog i mean it surpasses the ak in most cases and it's made in the USA.

P.S i only voted for the AK to be controversial :D

How is this a comparison? Different price points, different caliber, different purpose, etc.

That's like asking, "What do you like better? An Uzi or a basketball?"

(Uzi, by the way)

I have both and love both. The M1A is almost 2 lbs. heavier, but you get a LOT for that extra heft! Better max effective range, better accuracy, and better barrier penetration being the big ones.

The AK is more like something I would grab to deal with a deadly force situation going down in or around my home, where it is going to be more close quarters, and makes a good "truck gun;" whereas the M1A is my main overall "2nd Amendment purpose" rifle, for dealing with any threat anywhere any time at any range. Plus it makes a pretty damn good hunting rifle. The M1A is a rifle that I am highly familiar with. I am very confident in my ability to make hits with it from point blank out to the limits of its effective range, from field positions, and I know my come-ups cold out to 1000 meters. I have the spare parts to keep her going in the field, and I know how to maintain her. If I could only carry one with me, not knowing what situations I will have to deal with, it would be the old Springfield. So I voted M-14.

that is ridiculous these are guns not play things like a basketball.for the record the M1A is Superior . its more powerful, more reliable, more accurate and is a better design and its American made. as for comparing the guns they a both guns and both comparable. its like with cars they are not the same but you can still discuss which is better.

first of all your statement is over exaggerated and i was sick of seeing AR-15 V.S AK threads

Of course my statement is exaggerated. So glad you caught that. :scrutiny:

I voted AK because it seems quite a bit more versatile. I do love the M1A, though.

I love both but would have to go with the AK if it was intended to be my only rifle. My area would not present a shot over 200 yards. The AK is more than capable of this so the advantages of the M-14 would not be utilized. I would however have to deal with the extra weight and size as well as heavier ammo. I would also be able to buy two with mags and ammo for me and the wife versus one new M-1A

Ideally I would have an AK for my "go to" rifle that is well used. I would also have a beautiful M-14 nicely tuned up in the safe for fun.

One was the firearm with shortest life as US main rifle, the other is the most widely used firearm on the planet. Draw your own conclusion.

I had an M14 sniper rifle my second tour in Viet Nam -- I bullied my battalion commander into getting two for my company, and I only had one trained sniper, so I took the other one. I'd definitely go with the M14.

The M-14 is way more accurate, way more power. Slightly bigger but not by much. More ergonomic, better in every way including in a bayonet fight. The Ak is going out of service, the M14 back in. What does that tell you.

I think to say that the AK is going out, while the M-14 is coming in is a bit of a stretch. There are so many AKs out in circulation they will be used until they rust into nothing. M-14s are being used in selected roles, mostly in units who do not yet have or don't want to use the new DMR rifles. The military is NOT buying new ones. They ARE buying more KAC-pattern AR-10s for use as DMRs and using them with more units in more roles.

AK:

CQB weapon meant for 200-300 yard shooting. It can be pushed to 400 or 500 with the proper combination of shooter, optic, configuration and ammunition.

M1A Scout:

Can easily do 500-700 yards with good optics. Mounting optics can be a challenge, as can getting a correct receiver and parts. Get on http://m14forum.com/forums.php and start researching what you'll need to do.

I'm preparing to sell my CMP M1 Garand to raise money for a Polish AK-47.

As a history buff, the AK is much more appealing to me than the M14. There's 60+ years of history tied to the AK-47, and it's still being produced today.

The Russians/Soviets have always had a knack for making simple, easy-to-produce, and rugged small arms and battle field implements (like the T-34 tank) and the AK-47 is the ultimate example of this design philosophy.

Let's see, one is a quality American design, the other a hunk of stamped out tin. I dunno.....

IMHO two different beasts. Love both but can you compare a jeep with a mustang and then asking which is faster? or which is better off road? they were ment to serve different roles.

One gun and "the Road" situation: AK. Lighter gun, lighter ammo, accurate enough for most social encounters, and enough range to take care of yourself (250 yards with P setting and 300-400 if you use the sight elevation). 100-200 yards is good for hunting in my area, as chances are you wont be able to see much beyond 100 yards in most of this area anyway. Durability is excellent, the magazines double as a hammer/HtH weapon and are supremely durable. Lighter ammo then .308 so I can grab ~240 round of x39 for every 100 rounds of .308.

Plus, if I'm rucking a lot of other things whose purpose ranges from keeping me from freezing to death at night to keeping something in my belly, every pound starts to matter, quick.

Based on the question, I'd say a .22lr, perhaps a 10/22 as they are fun and good for fundamentals.

I don't know about that, for fact -- mabye fiction at best. The AK-47 is still very much used in many countries including our own Special Forces, not to mention all of the Semi-Auto AK-47's that are being produced every day here in the states.
And the comparison, I also agree is a little off as well since the AK is not a full power round and was never intended for sniper use unlike some of the M-14's were converted for such tasks.

M14 or M1A....I am old and slow, too old to fight so at 800 yds, I would own the bad guy with my M1A add the Burris 8X32X50 scope for my bad eyesight, I'll ring the gong....
FYI - I have seen slow motion film of them both firing...AK47 has serious barrel whip...accuracy is not so good out too far..
