I have heard some advice that i should put an AK 74 muzzlebrake on my new WASR and replace the slant muzzlebrake which came with the rife. Does anyone have any experience with other muzzlebrakes for their WASR other than the slant brake? What is the best place on the internet to get AK accessories? Will all AK 74 Muzzlebrakes fit the WASR?

I have an AK-74 style brake on a AK-47. Loud. Seems much more obnoxious than the slant brake. I don't think you really need a brake on the -47 unless you are firing full auto. Just not that much recoil.
I have purchased from Cope's, with good results. DSA also has alot of tacti-cool stuff.
AK-47 uses 7.62 dia bullets, AK-74 uses 5.45 dia. The true AK-74 brake has a smaller diameter hole.

The brake on my AMD 65 is also obnoxiously loud, and it reduces felt recoil considerably. Out of all the AK variations with different muzzle brakes I've tried, it seems to be the most effective. You should look into that.

Effective muzzle brakes deflect the jet of hot gas exiting the muzzle therefore they are going to be louder than no muzzle brake...that's how they work. The AK-74 style (when I say "style" I mean cheap US made knock off) brake for the AK-47 with the 1-14LH threads will fit. The real AK-74 brake requires a thread adapter and cost a bit more and are generally harder to find. In my experiance the cheap AK-74 style brake works great for the $10 investment and are far superior to the slant brake..

Well, the Russians have been shipping the AK-103 for several years.

Do you think they might know a thing or two?

There is no "one" best place.

With a 14x1LH to 24mm adapter, they will.

Avoid the cheap 14x1LH threaded "AK-74 style" offerings, as they're almost functionally worthless.

I got an AK74 style brake on my WASR-- don't know that it does alot, but it loks cool--

I just can't use my bayonet or get the cleaning rod out unless I take the brake off...

Oh well-- I don't use either anyway..

Are AK's suppressable? I see cans on AR's all the time but rarely AK's for some reason.

Not common, but the ejection port, action, and gas piston noise are rather... annoying compared to the AR-15 ejection port and action noise.

Yeah, I was gonna say they look cool and that's all that matters...

Seriously unless you're firing full auto (which we are not) does it make much of a difference? The AK-103 from Russia/Venezuela is a true assault rifle and needs some stability on full auto.

Yellowfin Are AK's suppressible?

Yes they are

I use the SEI DC Vortex AK-47/AKM Flash Suppressor with a SEI M14DC 0.30 Caliber Sound Suppressor. It's awesome and functions 100%.

There is a marked difference in the recoil of a 7.62x39 AK with a slant brake and an actual AK74 brake.

The Russians designed the slant brake to keep the muzzle down during full auto bursts.

The AK74 brake was designed to reduce recoil as well, and does an excellent job.*

* This does not include the cheap-o junior high school metal shop projects sold as "AK-74 style brakes" that are threaded 14x1LH.

Arsenal USA makes an ak-74 break (for 7.62x39 guns) with the half moon design, the same design the russians make. It has a huge expansion chamber unlike the cheap $10 ak74 copy, as well as the 24mm threads. YOu have to buy an adapter to use it. I bought one a few weeks ago, and it works ALOT better than the cheap ak74 break.

http://www.k-var.com/shop/product.php?productid=16986&cat=286&page=1 Scroll down a bit, and you'll see what I mean by the brake having the huge chamber.

No, the two-piece C-cut brakes are old-style.

The Russians have been fielding Z-cut (laser cut) one piece brakes for some years now.

I have an k-var ak74 brake (made for 7.62) on my SLR107FR. It noticeably reduces recoil and muzzle rise. Compared to the flash hider the rifle came with, group sizes are smaller too.

Mine is the 2 piece construction with expansion chamber and 3 asymmetric gas holes with hardchromed interior. My understanding in the Russians started with the laser zig-zag cut brakes, but changed construction to the cheaper 2 piece design later.

Zig-zag cuts on an EG 5.45 brake. Interior is hardchromed.
