AK 74 tantal buttstock

I've wanted to get a polish AK 74 tantal for awhile and when I had the chance to finally hold one at a gunshow I didn't like the buttstock. It was too short for me, (i'm 6'4) and I would like to know where I can get a folding buttstock that is full size but not a full stock. I've seen the stocks that go on the krinkov and I would like to know if you can get them on the tantal as well.

The Tantal can accept any stock that will mount to a standard AK. Because of this, a number of aftermarket folders are available for it. However, you will be hard-pressed to find another genuine AK folder that works because most require modification to the receiver.

The side-folding stock that comes on the AKS-74s (which is the triangular metal folder), including the AKS-74U (what most call the "Krinkov" version) will only work with receivers cut to accept the special rear trunion that includes the folder hinge and latch, and it only makes sense that it should also be cut for the forward retainer hook as well.

The Tantal will accept any standard AKM type butt-stock, though, including various more comfortable folders.

would this work on a tantal? it folds the opposite way than the standard stock.

How very interesting! I've not seen that before. It is an AKS-74 style folder, but with it's trunion mounted in a receiver extension that (they say) will mate up with the standard AKM rear trunion.

If it works as described, it will make the receiver about 2" longer (the length of pull will be two inches longer, as well with the stock locked open).

The really cool thing is that it appears to have the retainer latch that locks the folder in the closed position relocated to back beside the hinge and they've added a flat in the lower leg of the triangular stock to catch it.

Not a bad job. Looks like a factory part, though I've never heard of it before.

I'm around the same height and in the same boat -- it's not too bad with body armor on, but without it, I get a kind of nasty "nose-on-sling-swivel" cheek weld. The Tantal stock is supposedly even shorter than the normal "Warsaw Pact" length buttstocks, and I'm told Polish troops by and large also found it too short for comfortable use.

No idea on a good fix -- I tend to keep my AKs stock since I was always interested in them in a potential battlefield pickup in an emergency sort of context.

If you're 6'4", no Warsaw length stock is gonna suit you - whether it's a fixed, under- or sidefolder.

The PL/EG/RO side folders are the same Warsaw length as the others. They're just shaped a little differently where they contact the user.

First of all "Krinkov" is not a real designation for anything. It's just a slang term for a short-barreled Personal Defensive Weapon on the Kalashnikov action. Like an AKS-74U.

Second, I've already told you that a true AKS-74 style side-folder will NOT work on a Tantal.

Third, I've explained that the item you found on Gun Broker is almost exactly the same stock as on an AKS-74 (or -74U "Krinkov") but housed in a stock extension so it can be bolted to any AKM pattern rifle -- like a Tantal.

Also, if you're a large person, the additional 1.5" or 2" that will add to your rifle's length-of-pull will probably make the rifle more comfortable for you to shoot.

I would recommend an ace folder. You can also look up falcon arms folder (they come in two sizes including nato length) but they have the ugly external receiver block.

You can get an AK recoil pad from Tick Bite supply, which will add at 1 inch to the length of pull:

If you like the stock other than the length, that would your cheapest option, and would still leave the gun looking like a Tantal. That's what I recommend if you can deal with it being 1 inch longer.

Exactly, use the UTG buttpad. I'm also 6'4" and the buttpad makes it acceptably comfortable...seeing as how the low sights on an AK requires you to crane your neck forward anyways. The pad is pretty broad and feels good on my shoulder; it will still fold but just barely. You'll also need some sort of strap to keep it from occasionally falling off.
