I'm looking at trading for a buddy's AK variant, but I have some questions about it. It is built much like a Hungarian AMD 65, but with all the paint on it (don't ask) I'm not sure if it's an FEG receiver or not. I am not sure about the quality of this model, but this is what is stamped on the bottom of the receiver, just behind/before the mag well:

Mod: NDS-3
Cal: 7.62x39 (obviously)
Nodak Spud LLC
Edina MN USA
SN: MXXXXXX

TGI

I understand that TGI assembled AKs are supposed to be better than Century Arms AKs, but is this a quality gun? Are Nodak Spud receivers good to go, or should I go with something else? I'm not in a position to spend a bunch of money on an AK, but his comes with two 75 rd drums and a boat load of metal mags...besides, a decent AK with plenty of accessories (he also has a Midwest industries quad rail on it, and two stocks) isn't as easy to come by when all I see around here are WASRs.

Thanks for any advice...

It's not an FEG receiver, it's a Nodak Spud receiver. NDS receivers are fine. I have a Century NDS-2 AK-74 built with Bulgarian parts and it's a great rifle (I did replace the crappy Century furniture with a set from K-Var, though.)

Sounds like he's shot the heck out of it since he's got 2 drums and a bunch of mags. I understand it's an AK but the AMD-65 doesn't have a chrone lined barrel. Whats the asking price?

Dave,

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think it was an FEG since the Nodak Spud part was on there.

NOMI,

He said he's fired several hundred rounds through it. The mags were just what he collected along the way (if you can't shoot the heck out of it, then why have it?).

The asking price is a trade for an AR I have (and those I can get easily, or put my own together). I've got roughly $800 in the AR, but I'm not in love....

Hungarian AK's (and parts kits) are some of the best there are ... depending on the build of course, but I don't think Century ever built any Hungarians. Last I saw, the kits were bringing $350 - $400, which included a barrel but not compliance parts.

My opinion would be a $800 AR would be worth more but with the extras he has it might be pretty close. If it's your fancy I would go for it. One tip, open the receiver, shine a flashlight down the barrel and see if everything looks good. Also check for rust around the rivets going through the receiver. I prefer saigas but I almost got a AMD 65
