After listening to you guys talk, I’ve decided I want an “assault” rifle. What is the PC name for them now? I’m not looking for pretty. I am looking for a rifle that is reasonably accurate. I’d like to have an AR but I think they are probably more than I want to spend.
What is the best place to buy one? What should I buy, AK, SKS ?
Oh by the way I have $186.72 to spend. I that enough?

Just kidding. I’ll spend up to $600 on what will be a plinker.
I hate those posts where some guy wants a top-of-line rifle with top end glass and only has about half of what the rig is going to cost.

Properly, they would be called "rifles that look like assault rifles", but the SKS certainly isn't one of them. The SKS looks more like your grandfather's bolt action hunting rifle-- it's a decent rifle, just not in the same category.

Your best bet would be to go in and speak with a dealer, after doing some research on your own. Opinions abound, but what you like may be very different from what others like. Having a few friends take you out to the range can help a lot also.

The proper name is semi automatic rifle. For $600 or less you are looking at an AK. Get a WASR10 for around $300-$400, spend the rest on ammo, and mags.

Don't sweat the name game. I like to call magazines clips and revolvers pistols just to tick people off. Smoke pole tends to work. :)

I'll throw in for the SKS. Keep the built in magazine. I removed mine to use the plastic 30 rounds and it takes a lot of work to make them happy. Frankly, I think they trow the whole "vibe" of the rifle off. Stipper clips are cheap and avaliable and make for fast reloads if that is a concern.

I own and love both, but the SKS is more "gunnish". Just throw a butt extender on there. The are too short for most Americans. They are also easer to scope.

Just a neat gun.

Joe

Another SKS vote. I saw a really fine one in a pawn the other day that was refinished, had a scope, bipod, and buttpad for $300. I will probably get it before the elections, because bye bye 'assault rifles' if Hillary wins it.

You might be best served by getting an AK. For $600 you can get a nice one, or get an average one, and still have enough for plenty of magazines and ammunition.

I like to call them "anti-assault" weapons.....

I have a couple Ak's, several Sks's, and a Saiga...you can't go wrong with any of them....

For starters, an SKS or a Saiga would be great and keep you way under budget... saves more money for ammo, mags, and range time (or other training).

I refer to these weapons as battle carbines... but the media would probably do a number with that as well.

The lowest I would spend on an AR15 would be $750 for a Stag Arms. LMT is good if you have more money...

Does ammo need to be included in that $600? If it does then get an AK.

If it doesn't, you can find a decent AR for $600 if you shop around or build it yourself...Does it have to be new?

I have a Yugo and Norinco SKS, a Lancaster Arms AKM and two AR-15's both DPMS. The most accurate and most fun to shoot overall are both of the AR's but the others have their purpose as well.

For $600 you can get a decent AK. I'd go for either a Saiga or a Yugo, but a Lancaster or Vector would also be a good choice. The downside of the Saiga is that it has to be converted if you want it to look like an AK. The downside of the Yugo is that their dimensions and design are slightly different and many standard AK parts don't fit on them. Also they don't come with a siderail on them. They are both very good AK's though.

For $600 you'll be scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to AR's. If you really want to go that route, save up a couple hundred dollars more.

You can get an SKS for much less than that, but SKS's really don't lend themselves to any improvements despite peoples relentless attempts to do so. If you get an SKS just leave it stock. They're good rifles at an excellent price. Go ahead and put a peep sight on it, polish the trigger, get some stripper clips and call it good.

Get an AK. If you get an SKS, you'll just wish you bought an AK instead. Look to spend $500 on a vector or lancaster. Get a decent AK.

Ya know the answer already....... you already eliminated the SKS in your first 13 words....... if you want a rifle that LOOKS like an Assault rifle, FUNCTIONS like an assault rifle in semi auto mode And FEELS like an assault rifle then you have already cut your choices down to either the AK or the AR since the SKS has absolutally none of those characteristics unless you throw a bunch of worthless plastic wannabe an AK cr@p on it and even then it still will not fit the bill and you will have thrown a bunch of $$ away and still will need to buy your "Assault rifle"

Now that we have narrowed that down to either an AK or an AR, I'll ask how much do ya like having to tinker and tweak your guns to get them to function reliably? Because unless your an experienced smith this rules out those kits listed above as in 20+ years of smithing primarily military battle rifles that is always the case of the kit built AR........ if you like to tinker, enjoy replacing inferior mime parts as they go outa spec etc... then a Kit AR is your choice...... for $600 your not going to get a quality AR, like they say ya get what ya pay for and when it comes to budget ARs that means cut corners and low quality components to resemble an actual semi reliable battle rifle....

Now if ya wanna drop your new "Assault rifle" outa its box, load up a mag and go shooting with zero problems, all first rate Milspec components etc.. then spend $499 for a Lancaster basic AK via Atlanic arms If you can buy in person and don't mind a finish thats a lil lower grade than the Lancaster Moly resin over park go with a Yugo M70AB1 or M70AB2 the finish is just parked which has served militarys well for 60 years but still not a moly resin over park finish However you will get a heavier receiver, built in tritium night sights and many othe features still all milspec components, if ya gotta buy sight unseen then ONLY order from Classic arms as they actually inspect their Century distributed guns before they ship them the Yugo will run ya $429 right now, and if ya go for the underfolder and want to replace the black plastic forend that will run ya another $69 or so bucks for exotic wood.

Now for a few bucks more ya can get that Lancaster AK configured as an M4/AK with alluminum 4 rail front end, collapsable stock, you can add a side scope mount yourself in about 5 minutes and a $34 rail using button head allen screws, you will need to be capable of drilling two 3/16" holes.......

Either is well worth the extra $$ over a WASR or STG2000 (both are non milspec components and both built in the same factory for different distributers the WASR is Century the STG2000 is Interordinance internally etc.. they are the same gun with cosmetic differences)

My personal favorite are the Yugo M70AB2s but all of my AKs (over 400) are built by me over the last 20 years. Before my recent divorce we used to host shoots out at our place every weekend, usually between 40-50 people and while there were always several ARs, SKSs, FALs, CETMEs and G3s set out the AK based rifles were the ones everyone shot the most and the ones everyone visibly had the most fun playing with and I don't have any bargain basement ARs, all Colt and not one of em is prone to the usual jamming or other failures ya hear so much bout... but folks just never got as excited as they did playing with the AKs, most guys would gravitate to the L1A1s and other FAL patterns but after only a few rounds they'd put it down and go checkout the table of AKs, many never even fired the ARs and if they did it was only a mag or two and....... over to the AK table

Ammo right now for the AK will run you $189 per 1000 round case delivered to your door in bout 5 days
