i am looking to build an AK-47, i am in new york state, the western tip of the state, and i was wondering if building a semi automatic AK is even legal? what would have to be done to the build to make it legal? and where would be the best place to get a receiver if clones are even legal?.. gun laws are never clear, and im really not sure what to do about this.. if anyone has any information, let me know.. i know the bayonet lug would need to be grinded off, and magazines would need to be pre-ban, but what else?.. i was thinking of using a receiver made by nodakspud.

Build to your hearts content. Just be sure that there is no threaded muzzle and that you dont' have a flash suppressor on the barrel. A muzzle break is okay though. No collapsable or folding stock. No bayonette lug. Other than that you're golden.

Assault weapons are banned, they are defined as:

• A semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable
magazine and has at least two of the following characteristics:
• a folding or telescoping stock;
• a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;
• a bayonet mount;
• a flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate
a flash suppressor;
• a grenade launcher.

• Any of the weapons, or functioning frames or receivers of such weapons, or copies or duplicates of such weapons, in any caliber, known as:
• Norinco, Mitchell, and Poly Technologies Avtomat Kalashnikovs
(All Models);
• A semiautomatic rifle that cannot accept a detachable magazine that holds more than five rounds of ammunition;
• A semiautomatic shotgun that cannot hold more than five rounds of ammunition in a fixed or detachable magazine;
• A rifle, shotgun or pistol, or a replica or a duplicate thereof, specifically exempted from the federal assault weapon ban list as such weapon was manufactured on October 1, 1993.

(Shortened so it doesn't take up a whole page)

As long as it isn't legally an assault weapon, you're golden.

ok.. so only AKs manufactured by norinco, mitchell, and poly technologies are illegal? so a US made nodakspud receiver built AK project is perfectly legal as long as i grind off the bayonet lug? (im going with a fixed black synthetic stock) and if its legal, i want to get the AK-74 style muzzle break, i have a friend that can braze it on.. ill still need pre-ban magazines though.. right?.... telescoping and folding buttstocks are illegal, but is it illegal to have no buttstock at all?

Kind of a weird list. Listing only 3 manufacturers specifically, out of how many out there? And what's so fearsome about a stock that's adjustable for length or folds out of the way for compact storage?

maybe they dont want us hiding M16s, G3s, FALs, and AKs under our shirts? i dont see why telescoping stocks are so evil.. they claim semi autos are for spray and pray.. an adjustable stock allows for a better fit to the shoulder for a better aim.. kind of a contradiction, dont you think? so then.. it IS legal to go without a buttstock, im seriously thinking of doing that, not to be more compact, but i cant find a reasonably prices synthetic fixed buttstock that doesnt come in a package with a forearm and pistol grip i have absolutely no intention of using

Yes, you need pre-ban mags. Any steel AK mag is basically pre-ban because it was probably made in the 1970s-1980s. No poly-mags. No buttstock= short barreld rifle. That's illegal in NYS. You COULD technically register it as an AOW though... which is legal in NYS :eek: But I'd just keep the stock on it. Otherwise, you might in fact, be arrested for possession of an assault pistol (or so the state police might say). But basically, an AK with a fixed stock, no barrel threads and no bayonet lug is what you have to build. In otherwords, a still fully functional AK.

well, after looking hard eonugh.. i found a buttstock i want for $45.. just a typical black synthetic fixed stock, nothing special about it.. going to go with that.. an ergonomic grip with finger grooves, and a quad rail forearm
