i was wondering what i need to change in a romanian AK parts kit to make it US legal, im using a US made receiver, US trigger group, US pistol grip, US gas piston, anything else im going to need?... and i really need to find some preban AK mags (im in new york)

front trunnion = 1, rear = nothing.. 10 or less foreign parts is what you want.

If I buy all the parts I need, I can get my Saiga down to 4 Russian parts... the parts that count, not all parts count either.

if the rear = nothing then i have 10.. but since i might get a synthetic buttstock and a plain synthetic black forearm.. ill be easily under 10.. so no worries

Can you enlighten us not in the know regarding AK-47 parts compliance? Does this have to do with the lapsed semi-auto ban or some other Federal law? And if it's another Federal law can you provide a link to it?

Federal laws...

GCA, 18 U.S.C. § 922(r)
27 C.F.R. § 478.39

The 16 countable parts of an AK rifle. No more than 10 of these parts may be imported.

(1) Receiver*
(2) Barrel **
(3) Trunnion
(4) Muzzle attachments(flash hiders, brakes, barrel extensions, barrel nuts)*
(5) Bolt
(6) Bolt carrier
(7) Gas piston*
(8) Trigger*
(9) Hammer*
(10) Disconnecter*
(11) Butt stock*
(12) Pistol grip*
(13) Forearm hand guards*
(14) Magazine body **
(15) Follower **
(16) Floor plate **

The parts with the * are the most commonly available U.S. manufactured parts.

On a typical stamped receiver rifle you need to replace 5 parts with no muzzle attachment and 6 parts with a muzzle attachment.

On a typical milled receiver rifle you need to replace 4 parts with no muzzle attachment and 5 parts with a muzzle attachment, because there isn't a barrel trunnion, it is part of the receiver.

When building an AK pistol, these regulations do not apply. You can not have a stock or forward pistol grip on a pistol.

A little easier with a Saiga since it has 2 less parts, a Saiga to ak 1xx conversion leaves these 5 Russian parts if you use a US built magazine.

(1) Receiver*
(2) Barrel **
(3) Trunnion
(5) Bolt
(6) Bolt carrier

You could even go as far as replacing the receiver and the barrel, that would leave you with:

(3) Trunnion
(5) Bolt
(6) Bolt carrier

Parts ** are also now available online...

This question does not pertain to Ak47 but rather C&R firearms in general.

If a part becomes damaged does it void the firearm's C&R status if it is replaced by a like part?
