I've made 3 AK's now from nodak receivers but Copes had a deal on Polish
blank receivers, already marked and bent for only $25. Now that I have a few I have a question about compliance. Since the blank is from Poland but I am "making" it into a receiver is it technically a US made receiver or since the metal was from Poland, is it a Polish receiver?

Copes is now sold out of them but I did find another place they are still available. Keepshooting.com still has them in stock on their website for $22 if you are interested.

Thanks.

dang... I wish building an AK was as easy as building an AR... I'd love to build one at home

JohnnyK, I'm sure there's a semi-local builder in your area. I found my guy through a LGS selling converted siagas. Even in po-dunk IA I had no trouble finding a builder.

It *is* as easy as an AR.. :)

According to Tapco, who sells flats, it's not technically a receiver until you make the first bend. And, unfortunately, once you build the gun, you can't sell it unless you disassemble it.

Not true. You are free to sell it once it is complete, just so long as your mark it appropriately with a serial number, builder's name and location. If you build one for personal use, and decide to sell it later on, it's legal if it's marked.

You only run into issues if you build it with the intent of selling it.

For the original question, it doesn't matter *where* the flat came from, as it's not considered a gun. Once it's bent, it is considered a gun, so as long as it's bent in the US, it's a US-made gun.

Hell, the steel that most AK flats are made from these days probably comes from China... :p

The receivers are 80% complete, so they are not a "gun" yet.

(Having the first bend already does not matter)

That is also why you don't have to go through a FFL to get one. When you do your thing to it, it becomes an US made part.
