I was wondering what the difference between the various Ak-47's was. I knbow the wasr's have a mag well issue, but not sure. I had one the had an underfolding stock. but my step-dad sold it. wondering what kind that is as well.

What are the differences between people?

The differences in Kalashnikovs are legion. They have been made by dozens of countries for over 60 years. Some licensed and some not.

Many countries were told to use the Kalashnikov and given the tooling by Mother Russia, but they 'gave it their own twist' during the design phase.

I meant meant the question to be answered in a more technical sense.
The answers would take up many pages.

Slant brakes versus muzzle nuts

Angled underfolders versus straight underfolders

Heavy barrels versus standard barrels

wood versus plastic

wire side folders versus polymer side folders

extra thick receivers versus standard receivers

20" barrels versus 16" barrels

7.62x39 versus 5.45x39 versus 5.56x45

and on and on and on

If you want to see the differences, http://www.theakforum.net has a section that shows AKs by country of origin.

and just to keep the ball bouncing.....
semi-auto vs. full auto
underfolders vs. full-stock
"pistol" vs. sniper versions
Stamped receivers vs. machined receivers
metal, polymer or bakelite magazines
5 round "hunting" mags vs .100 round drums
blueing vs. park/gun-kote
Arsenal vs. Polytech
U.S. made mags vs. east block.........:D

If that's not enough info, find a copy of Kalashnikov: The Arms and the Man by Edward Ezell. Collector Grade publishes it, and you can probably get a copy on interlibrary loan from a military academy. It is pretty much the last work on AKs, at least until something better is written. It covers a massive number of variations, prototypes (like the original 7.62x41 caliber), and accessories. Like all the Collector Grade books, it's an incredible resource.
