Having done many hours of reading about AK Derivatives, the sporterized features of the 90s have me wondering whether they accept all normal double-stack mags.

A very experienced friend brought his 90, and having only its original 5-rd. mag, plus my recent purchase of two 'nib' Saiga rifles, made me wonder about the 90's actual mag well.

I have a MAK and it takes any mag I've ever put in it, including the new polymer ones. The 5-round mags are double-stack for what it's worth and there's an expansion you can add to them to make them 10-rounders.

I have a Norinco and a Polytech MAK-90, they accept the double column mags. They have the tightest mag well of all the AKs I have owned. Regardless, the only mags that have to be put in with some force are the magpul mags.

Not sure why anyone would want to pay the exorbitant prices for a Mak-90 today, though. They aren't that great by today's standards compared to similarly priced options. If you're thinking of getting one, you might consider one of the new US-made AKs or one of the Arsenal options.

Don't get me wrong, the Mak-90 was great for the 90's, but its legend far overstates its accuracy and how it stacks up against modern options.

I agree that they are not worth what most are asking for them now. I paid $400 for my first Norinco MAK around 2000. The one I have now was purchased last year for $600, but its seen some use. The prices today are mostly driven by the fact that they are no longer imported and drying up. Look at the current Russian AK prices, same situation.

IMO, The U.S. made options are not up to standard yet. Just look at the issues I.O. and Century is having. Substituting cast trunions for forged ones which has resulted in cracked trunions. Accelerated wear due to poor heat treating. Misformed and loose receiver rivets. Etc..

I think the MAKs are just as good today as they were in the 90's. If they had not been banned, I think they would add a lot more competition to today's AK market.

IMHO the MAK90 is one of the best built AKs going. They most definitely exceed the quality of the US production rifles and they don't sell for that much around here.
I've never seen a single stack mag MAK90.

My MAK-90 cost me all of $300 back in 1992. It rattled like crazy, but it was reliable and reasonably accurate. It took all standard AK magazines.

There was an AK version, perhaps a NHM(?), that had a pin that blocked the rear lug on standard AK magazines. The magazines designed for this setup had a small cutout on the rear lug for that pin, but were otherwise standard AK. IIRC, you could remove that pin for use with any and all AK magazines.
