I recently bought a Zastava PAP M92 in 7.62x39 and want to install an underfolder or side-folder on it eventually. I've already installed a krink brake and detent kit.

KVAR has Bulgarian underfolder kits for $100. I know I would need to find an underfolder trunnion if I went that direction.

AK Builder has the side-folder/trunnion combo for just under $200.

I would like to know if there are any shop(s) that could be recommended for the installation of the underfolder/side-folder stock. I live in NM and there are no shops here I really trust. Bottom line, I would like a reputable and experienced shop to do the install, even if I have to ship it out. I've seen pics of these rifles in existence, so I know there are shops putting them together out there somewhere.

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

I did both of mine using parts found here:

Not really caring about "authenticity", the no-gunsmithing method of using the adapter for an ACE folder that slips between the pistol grip and the receiver worked great, and the ACE folding stocks are arguably better than any "issue" AK stock. I used the Billet stock and am very pleased. I am completely satisfied with the result and recommend it without hesitation.

One plus in addition to the zero-gunsmithing and superior stock advantages is that you can remove it, sell the pistol as a non-NFA pistol, and sell the stock separately when you are done with it. It is not a "forever" entry into the NFA, as the actual pistol is not modified. Might increase the market for selling it "one day". The stocks, BTW, fit any adapter for the ACE system, so the only "Pap-Specific" part is the adapter.

AZEX quoted me $475 including engraving, staining the handguard, and installing an original Yugo underfolder, while Glockmonger said pricing started at $500.

Looks like I get to start my form 1 this weekend and get things ready to ship to AZEX. Their pic library was impressive and had many nice AK's they put together. I'm really excited about getting this done.

^^^ Why?

The underfolder is... err... "uncomfortable" to shoot and is not representative of any original builds (Krink's used their own unique sidefolder). Just explore the other option that I put forth above before handing over your money. You might even try it and if you don't like it... you already have a Form-1'd SBR that you can send off for permanent modifications and parts in your hand that are easy to sell.

It's your pistol and your money, but... for both shootin' comfort and cost the bolt-on way is the way to go, IMHO.

I have two built up, both on Form 1's. Since there is a surplus of them here, if you wanted to borrow a set of parts for a week or two to see how they fit and feel, when you get your Form 1 approved give me a PM and I can lend you a stock and adapter to see how you like it. Might be a painless way to choose between bolt-on and permanent modifications. Send me a copy of your approved Form 1 when it comes and I'd be happy to assist a fellow tinkerer.

The AZEX stuff does look really nice... in any event you're on the right track.

AK sbr

Thx Willie for the input.

I don't see myself as a huge purist or anything, but something about an AR collapsible stock on an AK doesn't look right to me. My neighbor had an AK SBR years back with an underfolder and I'm pretty sure that's where I got stuck on them. The side-folder option is a bit pricier, and I do like them, but it was a little outside of my budget.

^^ Did you look carefully at the link? Skip the AR type stocks and look at the GOOD ONES..

I am not using anything remotely resembling an AR stock, and I agree 100% that they are not what I would want. I am using a side folder that is very close to a Galil stock, and with the Galil being an AK varient, it looks just about right. The side folder is better than the original Krink side folder by a long shot, and puts the underfolder to shame.

IMHO, underfolders look very cool, but from a function standpoint kind of suck. An ace folder would be cheaper and function better. Now if you like the look of an underfolder and this is a fun gun, go ahead and get one.

I'm gonna have to sit on this one for a bit. I'm starting to consider 2 of the stock options on the US Machinegun website; being they are half the price (or less) of getting an underfolder installed, it's definitely worth the consideration. I'm really starting to dig the side-folder...

Back with more updates later.

Just another idea for the stock ,built by Deep Creek Outfitters in SD

Galil folder custom rear trunnion from scratch & new hand guards / refinished.

Nevermind, found their website. $495 plus I have to source the side-folder myself... not exactly what I wanted for that price.

Looks like I'm back to either AZEX or a bolt-on option. I might even consider a krink side-folder at this point. Any other shop recommendations out there?

Looks like JBI Armory out of Texas is the winner with a final price of $330... and that's for a triangle folder installed and shipping included. Now I just have to scratch together the tax stamp $$ and get the form 1 started.

All ppw mailed to ATF on 03/24/14, AK will go to JBI before the end of April. I'm hearing that the wait time on forms @ ATF are 10 months as of now.
