Whether you hunt with it, use it for defense or if it's just a range toy, what caliber Kalash do you like the most? I kinda gotta go with the 7.62x39 AKs cause they're the only ones I've ever shot

7.62x39. Most of my shooting is just offhand plinking at around 100 yards, so 7.62 is perfect for what I do. It's dirt cheap, and hits hard on milk jugs.

I like 223 and 545, both of which are flat shooting rounds with little recoil. However 7.62x39 is my go to round as procurement of ammunition, magazines and parts is easier with the more prolific caliber.

I've owned an Arsenal SGL in 7.62x39 and a 20.5 inch Vepr 54R set up for long distance. I ended up selling both. If I had to do it over, I'd get a 7.62x39 AK with a triangle folding stock. I'd leave it unscoped and pretty much stock, too.

7.62x39 is the best "bug out gun" caliber choice. 5.45 is a better fighting caliber (sorry, its the truth) and the .308 is the best hunter/DMR round. None are really the "best", they all serve a purpose. Only one that doesnt make sense is the .223.

Over the years, I've owned a few different AK's in 7.62x39. I like the caliber a lot.
But, the 5.45 just does it for me. I really enjoy shooting it.

For me, the AK really comes into its own when chambered in .308. For some reason, the recoil difference between the x39 and the x51 is negligible. Obvious downside is that 308 is 3 times the price of x39.

that's what surplus 7.62x51 is for

isn't exactly surplus and still not quite as cheap as x39 but still not a bad buy imo
