AK Side Mount Scope Rail: What's on yours?

Well, just what the title of the thread says... I have finally gotten my AR Pistol set up how I want it with an inexpensive(cheap) BSA 4 reticled dot scope, and flip up rear sight. So now I have turned my attention to WASR 10.
I am thinking about going with a red dot, but just wondering what is working for you guys out there to get some ideas. If your suggestion is the "Ultimak" mount I am not interested in that mount at this time. I figure hell, they put the rail there for a reason, I might as well take advantage of it . I am even open to low power magnifying optics . APW(All Pictures Welcome) ...

Side mount rail

I will be very interested in the responses, as I have toyed with the idea of the side mount. I've worried about whether these are strong enough and whether they will hold a zero.

The BP-02 mount is what I have. It works very well. The zero does not hold precisely if removed and remounted, but it stayed within 10" or so at 100 yards. If I remember right, it moved back when I reinstalled it again.

The side mount does work well for the AK's. It may be offset to the side though.

i got a Dragunov style 4x6 scope on mine... it might be overkill but i can still look thru the iron sights with it on

Run Kobra red dots on a Saiga and a Arsenal SA M7S and so far so good. Picked up a side mount with Weaver base from ANVS in Salt Lake City that sets the scope over the bore center on a 308 Saiga. You need to get a decent cheek pad so you can get good cheek weld to the rifle if you expect anything other than combat accuracy.

Kobra

My Arsenal SA-M7S wears the "second gen" Kobra (EKP-8-02) that MechAg94 linked to above. I really like it. It has four selectable reticles, and adjustable brightness. It's essentially a Russian version of the EOTech. I bought it from that site, too, and highly recommend Tantal for all your AK parts and accessories.

For some odd reason I kinda figured the Kobra would be the general concensus around here. Only problem I see with the Kobra(without ever having handled one) is the objective lens looks itty bitty. I really like a 30mm lens or better, preferably 40mm. Does the seemingly small lens bother anybody else? Keep the ideas coming though.

I have one of these Bushnell 1x-4x scopes on a FAL. It has a cool reticle with a little circled + in the center that works great at 1x for quick off hand shots. I've been seriously thinking about getting one of these to mount on my AK.

I've got an IOR M2 with the CQB reticule and .223 55 grain bullet cams on a low rail mount on my SAM-5A1.
It works.

Russian POSP 4x24 from Kalinka Optics. Nice, sturdy scope. Illuminated reticule. Around $100.

I run two different optics on mine.

First is a Kobra (the AA version) on a WASR.
The other is a 4x PSOP with the Simonov rangefinding/range compensating reticle on a fixed stock Yugo.

No, the Kobra's size isn't a problem, it's mounted far enough forward that it's best used with both eyes open.

Another option is the PK-AS series. The PK-AS mounts such that a right handed shooter would have to look through it with his left eye. The PK-AS-V centers over the receiver.


ETA: Doug Ford at Tantal is the best guy to work with.

The Kobra is a holographic CQB sight. It is meant to be used with both eyes open. It has no magnification. The size is not an issue.

I knew that, but I have had much better experience with picking up the reticle more quickly with a larger lens. The larger lens seemed to allow the best use of a correctly parallax adjusted dot. I could shoulder and then fire my Bushie just as fast as the dot showed up on the larger lens. It allowed off hand snap shots from a low ready type position on soda cans at 50-70 yards, to become an almost mundane task . That is why I would prefer a larger lens but I know it is not a requirement with the two eyes open shooting of red dots or holographic optics. It looks like I will have to give the Kobras a look.

Not sure what you mean by that, as holo type sights are completely free of parallax.

Not all dot scopes are parallax adjusted, and some are not adjusted until a certain yardage. I had a BSA dot that was not parallax free. I also had a Panorama(Hakko) tubless design that is the one I could pop soda cans with. On the BSA scope, I noticed that it would not hit point of aim if the dot was not centered. On the parallax free Hakko, as soon as the dot showed up anywhere on the 30 mm lens, that was where the bullet would strike. Hope I am not confusing you any further...

I have a PK-AV on one of mine, but it sits too high and left for me to use it with that folding buttstock.
