Are there any of these assault style rifles out there that use the 7.62x54r or 8MM cartridge? Ammo is SO cheap for them right now and I have ordered a Mosin but I would like to know if there are any assault style rifles already chambered in these cartridges, and if not how hard would it be to modify one?

Just my two bits...

You're cheapest bet would be to scower the online auctions and gun shows for a Romak-3. It looks like a Dragunov, but its really little more than a long barreled semi-auto RPK/AK-47. They are more of a designated marksman rifle (DMR) than a sniper rifle, but then again so is the real Dragunov SVD.

Mosins are sweet and that round kicks more @$$ than it is generally credited with. Romaks are findable and relatively cheap (under $1000 and includes scope).

Thanks for the replies so far. It seems that most of the options are pricier type guns, and it takes SEVERAL rounds to pay for an extra $600 on the rifle. Apparently it is not worth fooling with trying to get another rifle modified to shoot one of those calibers either. Maybe I should just get an M44 and give up on this idea.

Hakims aren't usually $600, more like $450. You aren't gonna easily modify any rifle to accept a cartridge 15 mm longer than it was designed for.

You can also easily modify MG-13 mags to fit the Hakim... Fun stuff!

if you are handy with toold and minor mechanics you can get a ROMAK kit and a reciever and build one for seems less that 600:

Prices may vary so you might want to shop around a bit.

I just finished my AK kit, it was fun and very satisfying when I took it to the range the first time and it WORKED.

It's not an "assualt rifle". However, there are plenty of mausers out there in 8mm.

The Yugo's are real nice and still under $200!! I much prefer them over the Nagants, especially for the price.

7.62x54R and 8mm Mauser are not "assault rifle" cartridges. They are full power military rounds designed to be used with bolt action rifles. If you want a semi-auto that shoots these rounds look for a FN 49 in 8mm or one of those Romak or Draganov rifles already mentioned. The SVT 40 also fires the 7.62x54R and the German G 43 fires the 8mm round. Both of those rifles are collectible and are rising in price though.

Well, your 2 choices really boil down to a Hakim (8mm, about $450-500) or the Romaks (7.72x54R, about $600-700).

I wanted a Romak (since I can't afford $2000+ for a true Dragunov) but when I got to handle one, I was severely dissapointed. They are very cheap looking/feeling (although they may be accurate I dunno). So I've been looking for a Hakim locally, but haven't found one (I like to see what I'm purchasing).
