OK, after I took the following picture I removed the two screws I've highlighted in blue. Is there a hidden one? I can't get that thing off of there for the world! Any tips or tricks?

Thanks,

Is there one on the underside of the stock? You can try taking off the pistol grip, I think there is another one under there somewhere. Without looking at my AK, I can't remember offhand where it is.

It might just be pressed in there, get a wood dowel and tap it out very easy. Doesn't look like there's any other screws holding it in.

yup, thats exactly how my stock looked like.. just get a dowel and place it on the piece of wood that has that half circle of metal over it(on some of the "how to guides" that circle was complete allowing the use of a screw driver to just lever it out) however, becuse there is nothing to lever, just get a dowel of some sort and tap it out(you only need to remove those two screws(at least on my SAR1)

The dowel thing works pretty good. There are only two screws, but they shove the stock in there pretty tight.

Just curious..what are you replacing it with? I recently redid by with a Bulgarian black polymer set. Those are pretty nice.

well i tried beating the snot out of it with a steel bar and hammer, and it didn't budge at all... guess it's just REALLY in there.

Well after i get the stock off, i'm taking the pistol grip off and figuring out how my folding stock is going to go on. I really don't see how it's going to go on without me doing some welding, drilling and tapping, but it all depends on what stuff looks like when i get that darn stock off.

(and after i get that streight, i'm putting it back in original config, 'till the AWB dies - and it had better... :fire: )

You could try and tap the stock from side to side and up and down on something (table, wall, etc.) and loosen it that way and then pull it straight back. I would consider that last ditch though. You could tweak the receiver if you did it to hard.

Not sure what kind of folder you have, but probably the easiest one to put on there is the Romanian side folding stock. It fits into the standard fixed stock tang (after September of course  )

Tried that already, Victor...

I don't know WHAT that thing is in there by... but jeez!

Tomorrow I'll work on it some more;

I've heard....

that the stocks are put on before the varnish is dry and it 'glues' itself to the receiver. All I hear about it is you need to try wacking it around abit.... eventually the seal will break.

I generally wedge a screwdriver blade between the front of the stock inside the receiver and the cross bar of the rear trunion and pull back on the stock. Yours appears not to have that cross bar. Odd. Perhaps you could pull back against the pistol grip nut? Pressure from the inside has worked best for me in any event.

Well after further examining the folding stock, I came to the conclusion that in order to get it on, I would have to drill or grind off the rivets (in red) ) and remove the bracket thingy (in green ) and drill another hole in the receiver and then riviet or screw the thing back together. Well, I'm not that brave, and it's not really worth the trouble.

But thanks for your help.

I have a SAR-1 that I wanted to change the stock on and like yours I'm sure it was varnish glued on. I tried everything to get it off. Even pulverized a couple of dowels trying to beat it out. Eventually I gave up, cut off the stock and drilled and chiseled the remainder out of the tang. Thought I'd never get that thing out. I like it much better with the K-Var extra length plastic stock and forend in OD green.

If you are going to ebay a folding stock, do it VERY quickly...they have stated they are going to stop the sale of any "assault rifle" (as defined by CA) parts.

Don't put on a folder unless you are sure it is a legal modification. May want to wait til after Sept and hope the assault rifle ban expires.

Your 'blue' screws are the only screws holding the stock on. I learned how hard adding such a stock was. My SAR-1 came with a synthetic stock that I didn't like, and tossed in the wood stock for free. I decided to wait until September for a folding stock. To fully seat the wooden stock, I inserted the wooden stock as far as possible by hand, then slammed it against a concrete pad a few times. Worked like a charm!

I don't want to imagine how hard it will be to remove it come September. I'm thinking of having two people pulling in opposite directions, or using a very heavy vise. For future wooden stocks, I'm probably going to shave off a bit of wood. If she rattles, one can always put in a bit of dampening material to keep it quiet.

I suspect it's glued in place or the wood has expanded a bit. Bashing it, within reason, would probably loosen it up.

For tight AK buttstocks like that I remove both screws, hold the rifle by the forend w/the bbl towards me (made d@mn sure it's unloaded!) then alternate whacking the top and bottom of the buttstock onto a carpeted floor w/moderate force. It may take a couple of dozen whacks before you see progress but it's worked every time for me and doesn't mar the buttstock.
