What exactly are the differences in single hook and double hook triggers? (and by this, I mean in the way that they function)

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Is one preferable over another, and why?

Single hooks were easier to machine, and most receivers aren't machined for double hook. I find the double hook has a touch smoother trigger pull, and in the unlikely event you ever had one break, there was another to fall back on. Single is cheaper.

Most prefer single that know the difference, at least, those in my circle.

The other aspect is that a double hook requires that additional slot in the receiver, which creates an unsupported tang sticking out. This is a weak point. Not something that's ever likely to bend or break, but logic dictates that it's substantially weaker than with a single slot. If you really want a double hook, all it takes is a few minutes with a Dremel to put in an additional slot. I'd say just leave it as it is, though.
