7.62x39 white tail and black bear upstate new york may be going to adirondaks for white tail and black bear , black bear are around 2-300 pounds i hear around there on average its the rifle i have and i dont have any plans on buying another (plans do change though ) does the job on white tail at 50-100 yards never gone after black bears though i do have a few shot guns but nothing packs as easy or as light as a underfolder. anyone have any AK hunting history?? any info helps thanks

You can consider the 7.62x39 to be a 30-30 Winchester shooting lighter bullets a little slower.

If you use good Soft-Point hunting bullets, and put them in the right place, it should get-R-done.

Be sure and check the NY hunting regulations as far as magazine capacity limitations, etc.

According to the NY State Dept. of Environmental Conservation:

It is illegal to hunt or take wildlife

•with any semi-automatic firearm with a capacity to hold more than 6 rounds, EXCEPT the following semi-automatic firearms:

1. firearms using .22 or .17 caliber rimfire ammunition, or
2. firearms altered to reduce their capacity to no more than 6 shells at one time in the magazine and chamber combined, or
3. autoloading pistols with a barrel length of less than eight inches.

It would seem that the purchase of a 5 round magazine or two is in order. Don't have any larger capacity magazines with you.

so now that we are all on the same page, has anyone ever shot a black bear with a rifle chambered with the 7.62x39 rifle round.

7.62x39 would be ok on black bear with good placement. Having fast followup potential with the AK design makes it nice, though I'd prefer at least a .30-.30 with 175 gr. SPs.....better penetration.

i think you can go to any sporting good store dicks etc. i'm pretty sure i have seen that stuff there i used have some 30/30 hollow point stuff

A buddy of mine took a 4 point 2 years ago with his Yugo SKS and silver bear SP's down in cattaraugus county. The only mods to his rifle were a set of Tech-sights and a detachable 5 round mag. I think the SKS is a very nice budget deer rifle for less than 150 yards. I think that it may be a bit underpowerd for black bear though! For $100, I would pick up a M/N M44, and load it with some wolf gold 180gr SP's. I think 7.62x54 makes a better bear round.

no mag cap here in wi, (for deer at least) i use mines once last year. got a little action but no deer. however my cousin got one with his sks. within range, the 7.62x39 is very capable of taking deer. once using umc hp and second using wolf sp. like any firearm, shot placement is key.

Yea, I took a 5 point with my Chinese SKS which shoots the 7.62x39 last year at about 95 to 100 yards, not to hard. But the one thing a bought bear hunting is you usually don't get real close to them, so if i were you i would buy or borrow someones hunting rifle. Say like a 30-06, a 7MM, or 300 MAG, or a nice 308 just to make sure he drops.

I would be careful about hunting with the AK with that big of a mag in it, if a game warden park ranger catches you with it they can take the gun away. Just like when you go turkey hunting you better have the tube stop for the rounds.

***before selecting firearm make sure it meets the legal requirement for hunting***, i was told five was the limit capacity rounds here but i saw people in the woods with various like a 30-30 can hold 7, sks holding 10, then i called the dnr and they said there was no limit for deer. i don't think they will take away your firearm but give you a big fine.

Hunting with a center fire semi-auto in NY is limited to a mag capacity of 5 (+1 in the chamber... for a total of 6). Also, NY has a type of 'assault weapons' ban which makes mags manufactured after 1994 that hold more than 10 rounds - no matter what the use is for - illegal. Be sure that the mag cannot hold more than 5 rounds when hunting and don't even bring any 30 round mags at all....

Lobo, for a big bad critter that can eat you I would use a big bad rifle. I'm also heading to the Dacks for early bear. This is my first dedicated bear hunt and I'll be at a spot where there is a known bear habitat. I'll be going with a buddy and camping. Personally as a married man with a young son, and hunting a close quarters, I do not want to have to take a third shot. Maybe you have more courage than me but I'm not willing to mess around with anything that can kill me. I'll be using an 1895G in 45-70. Good luck.

I have hunted in the Adirondacks many times and it is unlikely you will need to shoot anything. Largely gameless. No food for deer there, more moose country but the brain worm the few deer Carry[harmless to them, fatal to moose] keeps moose from repopulating. Where exactly are you planing on going?

Personally, I prefer accurate hunting rifles that only require one shot. Get close enough and at least the caliber is up to the job. Anything the .30-30 will kill, the 7.62 will with the right bullet. 154 soft point wolf stuff is a bit more accurate in my SKSs. I like that stuff, but I've not shot anything with it except for paper.

Jim, I'm headed to North Elba in the high peaks wilderness area. There are a few places where bear frequent . I'm planning the logistics for camping and removal of the carcass should we be so fortunate, as it's a 3 mile hike out on a fire road, no motorized vehicles. I hope to head there one day this week for a recon of the habitat. A few years ago some hunters from Michagan bagged a 500 pound black bear in the same area - exactly where it is I'm not going to be more specific at the moment. I was out there last week and there was scat in a few places. Hey are you the guy who had the building in Ausable Forks? Be well to all.
