AK74: Ammo?

The 7.62x51 tumble as well, they just wait until the last second to do it LOL, for real they do leave a NICE exit wound, they usualy penatrate 10-11 inches before they yaw. Now the military issue 175gr will yaw on contact leaving a NASTY wound canal, but we never got those in my unit :( It is a sniper round and will probably never see the inside of a .30 cal machine gun, someone told me that bullet is a HP Match King, but I cannot verify that.

There are more than a few people walking around with lead bullets and pellets in them because it is often safer to leave projectiles in place and let the body encyst them then to try and dig them out.
Ding, ding, ding...if pure lead was poisonous I think i'd be very much dead by now (I have had a chunk in me since I was about 12YO or so...which is, um, more than a couple years back).

I nearly decided upon a new rifle chambered for 5.45x39.5mm, but ultimately decided that the cheap ammo wasn't worth the extra care required for cleaning (thoroughly cleaning a SA rifle is a PITA), and NC ammo was just, or nearly, as costly as .223Rem./5.56NATO. Instead, I think i'll be going the pistol caliber carbine route...probably in 9mmLuger.

:)

GunTech:
I really enjoy reading you guys' objective ammo/rifle evaluations.

What is the typical bullet used in common x39 rds. used around the world in classic AKs and the SKS by armies, guerrillas etc? The Russian black-market arms merchant (former AF officer) who is now being extradicted to the US would have supplied mostly Russian-made ammo around the planet?

Even though many people are hit by more than one round, is the ammo in authentic AKs usually fmj, or possibly jhp?

Curious, because I've mentioned before the colorful, graphic photos of a single fatal wound to a Texas feral pig, posted about two years ago
(on "THR" or "Thefiringline). The guy's SKS ammo was jhp, but no idea whether US-made, commercial Russian etc.
If the Cuban govt. ever opens up and we decide to lift the trade embargo, would they have any incentive to buy more modern rifles, and sell us many pallets of x39 ammo?
Samco in Miami is just 90 miles away, and many tourist$ come to Cuba from the Caribbean, Latin America to spend lots of money.
Sure, the idea is crazy, but so was the idea that the Berlin Wall would ever be torn down.

Some of the most impressive fragmentation and yaw happens with the 7.62x39 Sapsan (ulyanovsk 8M3) HP bullet. You can find that bullet loaded in the wolf military classic line.
Not any more. The last Mil.-Classic batch that I bought was standard, rebranded Tula. I believe that all the new stuff with the polymer coating is Tula. Unfortunate, because it was really good ammunition.

Could be either dependent upon which plant the ammo was sourced from. The Uly. mentioned above is HP, as is some Tula, most (but not all) other Russian ammo is FMJ.
