Need some advice here re: two models of the AK-74 A friend of a friend of mine has a Bulgarian SLR-105 rifle that he wants to sell, asking around $800. It looks like this, and he says it’s in good shape. I haven't seen it yet, but let's assume he's telling the truth:

I know that these are not imported anymore, and it has basically been replaced by the Russian SGL-31: http://www.arsenalinc.com/sgl31-61.htm.
I think these are going for around the same price brand new My question is whether there is anything special about the SLR-105 to warrant buying that one, versus a new SGL-31, or is the quality similar. TI've heard that the SLR-105 is "hard to find," but is that because people really want them for some particular reason, or just because they are no longer imported. Thanks

The SLR 105 is a better rifle. They started at around 600 back in the early 2000's and now they are $800 -$1000 if you can find one. They are not a reworked Saiga. They are a Bulgarian built stamped rifle. My only caveat is that some SGL-31's are pretty darned good too... but if I had to choose I would certainly choose the SLR105. Before you bought one used I would look good at the inside of the receiver near the breech and in the gas tube for rust or pitting. A great many folks are shooting corrosive ammo through these. Also why is he selling? How big of groups did the rifle shoot for him?
