'Alamo' Movie Touches Raw Nerve in Mexico

Considering it is no longer the time of the Alamo, I'd be careful about using that argument today.

No, there's absolutely no reason why I should be. The fact that there were more Anglos in Texas than Mexicans at the time of the Alamo relates to the ongoing claim since then by some Mexicans and racist anti-American Hispanics living in the US (e.g. Cruz Bustamonte) that Texas was unlawfully seized from them by the US. Thier argument depends on a revisionist history which is based on a number of falsehoods, one of which is that Texas and the rest of the Southwestern US was "settled" by the Spanish-Mexicans. Pointing out the truth, i.e., that there were more Anglos in many parts of the Southwest at that time is perfectly appropiate. Mexico has no legitimate claim to the Southwestern US on any basis whatsoever; legal, historical, moral, or otherwise.

As for the growing numbers of Mexicans in the US, very few want the US States they now live in to rejoin the poverty-stricken dung-heap that Mexico has become. They left Mexico to be rid of the corrupt socialist government generated poverty that permeates the place.

Nor would a new modern-day hispanic majority in CA, TX or any other US State suddenly give Mexico any legitimate claim to those areas. Those lands have been settled, developed, and defended by blood by Americans for 160+ years.

And finally, I don't recall any passage in the Bible promising TX and CA as the promised land to Mexicans as Israel is promised to the Jews.

I know the film ends with the battle of San Jacinto, but does anyone know if they show any of the battle of Gonzales? I hope so, it would be nice for the general public to be exposed to a little “Molan Labe†– Texas style. :)

True, but I think the federal government ought to watch this and take heed before they think about imposing martial law or suspending the Constitution in the wake of future large-scale terrorist attacks.

A point worth noting, especially in view of the fact that there are supposedly about 2 guns for every adult in Texas (i.e. about 30 million), and on average they are of considerably higher quality and range than what was available in 1836. Even small numbers of skilled and determined freedom-fighters armed with precision bolt-action rifles can exact a fearsome price.

Regarding the Mexican's displeasure with this movie: F'em! They are more upset that they lost and that we're proud of winning than at the movie itself, and it will ever be so. My wife is Mexican (soon to be a right-wing and voting citizen), and I regularly remind her that "we kicked your a$$es" - she doesn't like it much, but facts are facts.

P.S. I only do it to tease her and her relatives, and it doesn't really matter as neither her family nor mine were in North America at the time - both were being oppressed by the Czar or various East European dictators, aided by the fact that our relatives (among others) weren't armed. I am certain that neither my wife nor I nor any of our descendants will ever be similarly disadvantaged.

Here we go again! Expect movies and books being TOTALLY political correct in the future! We just can't hurt anyones "feeeelings".

We don't need to burn books, we have PC!

Actually they are taking back the land they lost and not firing a shot, however
when all is said and done they will simply end up with another Mexico.:banghead:

.....now I feel guilty, perhaps we should pay reparations to the Mexican decendants.....

...you can have California back and we'll call it even. :D

I took my family to see this movie last night. I'm a 51 year old native Texan, married to the daughter of the first Hispanic Mayor of LaPorte, TX. LaPorte is about 5 miles from the San Jacinto Battleground.

We thought it was great! Billy Bob Thornton gave the best performance of Davy Crockett ever. The Duke couldn't hold a candle, nor could Fess Parker.

History is written by the winners, so if the Mexicans don't like the story, then there is another lesson on why Americans should always play to win.

In the battle in the courtyard of the Alamo, I couldn't help but notice that the Mexican troops had bayonets, and used them to deadly effect.

Crockett and his men had hunting rifles, with no bayonets. When they fired their single round at close quarters, the rifle then became a club.

It was clear to me that the militia equipped with hunting rifles was at a great disadvantage to regular army troops with military weapons.

Thought provoking, no? :scrutiny:

Saw the movie yesterday with my wife. I liked it, Thorton did an excellent job as Crockett. Suggest reading : Three Roads to the Alamo: The Lives and Fortunes of David Crockett, James Bowie, and William Barret Travis. HarperCollins, New York, 1998. by William C. Davis, Professor of History and Director of Programs, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

Why are these people always yapping about the United States "taking" Texas? Texas won its own independence and then joined the United States voluntarily a few years later. It's not like the U.S. army was at the Alamo.

Unlucky
If they had won, there would be twice as much land mismanaged and the illegals would be swimming across the Mississippi, rather than the Rio Grande.
And conversely, if the U.S. had taken all of Mexico, much of it would be some of the most expensive real estate in the hemisphere, and they would feel no need to come here by the millions.

Now that's an interesting proposition. Imagine the US today if in 1846 we'd just annexed the whole country.

All that oil, rich land, and all the other resources of Mexico that remain undeveloped today.

Imagine...

Its never too late?

SCrew Mexico. They are just pissed because we kicked their ass and took their land. We need to do it again to shore up that southern border. It loks like a little hot lead is all they understand.

Go buy a waaaaaahmburger and some french cries, mexico.

Oops....that implies that they can afford it, doesn't it?

My mistake...what I should have said is that fox will convince Bush to buy waaaamburgers and french cries for them.

*sigh*
