All AR parts the same?

I bought an Amalite AR-15 about a month ago and it came with a stainless 20" barrel. I am looking to get a 16" carbine upper.
Do I have to buy an armalite upper or can I get one from most any company.

Also, this may be a stupid question but are the .223 and .308 lowers different? can you put a .308 upper on a .223 lower?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

your lower receiver should be compatible with other companies' 5.56mm upper receivers.

nope! .308 uppers and lowers are different sizes than 5.56 uppers/lowers.
