All done with Colt 8 round mags

Interesting. I've been using the Colt 8-round magazines exclusively now for at least 6 months, and have literally had zero problems. I'm using them in .45ACP, 10mm, and .40S&W.

Ed...Short loading the magazines by one round doesn't do anything to address the last round issues...which is where most of the problems occur.

Matt...You should play the lottery. How often does your extractoir require retensioning?

Tuner,

Well I really can't speak too much about the round followers in the .45 mags. By the time I moved away from the Wilson 8 rounders, Jim had my 9x23/38 Super done. I've only got about 3,000 rounds through my .45 ACP chambered 1911s with those round follower Metalforms. That's really not enough to notice any problems that might surface using them.

If I had to take a guess, I've probably got about 10k now in 38 Super through the gun using those mags with the round followers installed. Jim liked the Wilson follower because it allowed 10 rounds in the magazine, but after I wore them all out I got one of each of the different 38 Super followers Metalform offered and tried them all. I just liked how the round follower worked the best. Although it only allows 9 in the mag, I figured 9 was good enough.

Try just using 7rds in the 8rd mags before spending your money. Sometimes the easiest solution is the best solution.

Tried that already.... same results...

I just got off the phone with Trip Research.... Very nice to get a live human on the first ring who actually knows something.... Knows a LOT actually, and patiently took the time to diagnose my issues.....

I thougth the little discoloration on my feed ramp (stainless frame) was some brass or lead build up that wasn't coming off with Hoppes.... now I know that my Cold 7 round mag followers are "following" and dinging the ramp.

Ordered super-7 rebuild kits.... some with hybrid followers and a pair with the flex followers (which, if they work will keep the 8 round capacity).

So I'll be fixing two problems... one I knew about and the other I didn't

Ken...The only ones I've tried have been .45s, and most of the listed issues have been with Commanders. Lighter, faster slide.

Vet...Assuming the proper spring and anywhere near the correct rear leg to top angle...the standard 7-round follower won't ding your feed ramp. It can't move forward far enough because the spring keeps thge rear leg nailed to the back wall of the magazine tube.

Most of the .45s I put through those round follower mags were through my LW Commander.

This one here

I haven't put much through that one because 9mms and 38 Supers felt much more pleasant to me, and the components cost so much less.

I'm with Rella. Chip McCormicks 8 rounders or Mec Gar have worked very well in my Colts and Springfields. I'd replace springs first and see what happens. It's not the feed lips or you'd have the issue from the first round down.

My Colt 8 rounders have worked flawlessly for me... my favorite mags actually. The chip McC's run great for me also. I haven't had good luck with the Metalform 10-rounders I got from CDNN. Very occasional jams/FTFs.

I haven't checked my extractor tension, nor do I know how to... but the pistol (Colt MKIV Stainless Combat Commander) runs perfectly with them and has for a couple thousand rounds I'd guess. 1911 tuner, when can I expect trouble with my extractor? :)

the standard 7-round follower won't ding your feed ramp

Any suggestions what could be doing it then? These are the only mags I've ever ran in this Commander.

For $7.95, I'll be tackling both ends of the argument.... Chrome Silicon .048" dia springs and modern design followers.

Some hollowpoint bullet profiles will dig into an aluminum alloy feed ramp. If you've been using the 8-round mags with the McCormick/Devel followers, they'll definitely eat into the ramp.

Looking back, I see that you're shooting a Combat Commander...steel-framed pistol. I can't figure what's happening with that. The only feed ramps I've seen with follower and.or bullet dings are aluminum.
