Its another "what 9mm should i buy" topic, but hear me out...

Diffrence is that this one will be loooong. Im from Czech Republic and over here we must past exam to get our gun permit and then we can buy a gun.
Currently im already waiting one year to get to the exams. Its because personal and byrocratic issues + covid pandemic. The main issue is that i will have to wait more, probably till april at best.
And im living alone, working from home with a lot of free time. So im looking at guns and every week have new favorite one.
But i need to discuss it and hear some other opinions. Also i just like to talk about guns.

Few months ago i was dead sure to buy Taurus TX22 because 22lr is super cheap and i could train a lot with that... but as pandemic starting to be darker and darker (at least over here) and im waiting longer and longer, i decided for 9mm. And that will not change because other calibers is out to of my budget since im planning to shoot a lot (at least twice a week)

Im not looking for EDC gun, more like range fun, fast shooting and home defence with some training value (meaning that gained skill would be tranferable to other guns)
Kinda Glock 17 size - i have rubber Glock 17 and its so-so in my hands. So far i was shooting CZ 75 compact and P10 subcompact and both was just too smal for me.
I dont want glock or CZ 75 (but derivates are fine). I have my reassons and since i respect its fan base and track record i will keep tham for myself.

Also want reliable gun even with cheaper reloaded ammo or at least S&B 115 Grs FMJ.
Passive safety on todays standards

Budget is around 600 US dollars for imported guns (they comes with +30% price increase) or 900 for czech gun, but keep on mind that prices over here are sometimes pretty random

So far my favorites are:

1. Steyr L9 A2 MF - i like the looks, somehow inovative approach and supposedly reduced recoil. That original sights doesnt bother me and big + is diffrent grips straps. On other hand i heard rumors about A2 version have problems with cheap and light ammo
2. Sig SP2022 - Sig is Sig, rought look and known quality is plus. But i kinda worry about that odd beavertail because i have kinda large hands and it mayby affect recoil?
3. Canik TP9 DA - because it offers a lot of bang for money and it have good reviews

I also like IWI Masada, but according to IWI sites they will come to stores (in Czech) in Q3 and we still dont know price.
Jericho 941 would be one of my top picks, but as far i know, it doesnt have drop safety, which kinda worries me + they are reported problems with spare parts

Thank you for your input, recommendations and opinions

Cant go wrong with an SP2022.

I think there have been some issues with the aluminum alloy on the 92S frames causing excessive wear. They will definitely need to have the updated locking blocks installed, unless the Italian Police already had them retrofitted. Then, of course they require magazines with the lower latching cut.

What about a Tanfoglio? Ive had several and they were excellent.

I’m not sure what the latest offering from Steyr has going on, but I like my L9A1 a whole lot. It does everything that anyone could ask of any comparably priced 9x19 striker fired pistol on the market, does it with superior sights, and most importantly does it without being a Glock.

How would something like the HK VP9 be priced? I love mine but I have smaller size hands. It.does come with adjustable grip panels like the Steyr and it also has a great trigger. There's also the CZ P07 to consider too.

In SP2022 case i have worries about that beavertail, its odd shape and it look like in high hand position i would not be able to maitain firm grip. Due current situation i cant go to try it + only few shops have it in stock. And i just find out, there will be mayabe some complication to get more magazines, but thats minor

Well, i will not risk it with that beretta

I did look for some Tanfoglio but its odd, but there is only few old and used ones in stores, then some out of budget pieces

Steyr L9 A1 is currently really cheap, on same level as that used beretta, but that will be probably out of stock soon. New version A2 will be probaly only one option when i get finally my gun permit

HK VP9 is in budget limit (900 USD in local shop), i will check it more, thanks for tip

I am kind of in the same boat but made a list of 9mm pistols to try before committing to a purchase. Here in NJ, you need a permit to purchase a pistol which is supposed to take 30 days, but generally takes 6 months. You also can only buy one every 30 days and can only get three permits at a time.

Here are the 9mm pistols I'm looking at:
Walther PPQ M2
Smith and Wesson M&P 2.0
Springfield XD-M
Sig Sauer P320

I'm not a Glock fan, as they don't seem to fit my hand or grip very well.

The thing about CZ guns (P-07/09, 10) is that they are actually half the price in US that over here. That makes tham kinde overpriced vs for example Canik. P09 is my top for local gun and i do acknowledge that they are quality firearms, but it doesnt provide so much bang for the money as others. Plus is kinda annoying that everybody here in Czecha have tham. Oh and they look odd in full size.

And i dont want to sound picky (which Im), but i also dont like PPQ and M&P 2.0.

But i was looking at XD-M and other guns from that brand (over here known as HS produkt), but it looks like only one shop have tham in stock and its shop with reputation "yeah, yeah, it will be here soon..." if you know what i mean.
Sig P320 is above budget (1100 USD here), i like it, but i already raised my budget and have to spare something for rifle and ammo ;)

My opinion....

I am a Glock shooter, but I respect if that’s not your preference.

Steyr is a fine gun. I have no idea why they never really caught on here.

Canik has a strong following here and by all accounts a lot of gun for the money. You’d probably be happy with one.

Sig...the 2022 is probably my favorite Sig. Great value for the money here.

Too bad CZ is so expensive there, but the P09 is a great gun. And it can easily be modified with a .22LR slide for cheap practice.

I am curious what your issue is with Glocks...are they expensive there?

Idahou

Have you been able to check out any of the SIG P series like the P226, P228, or the P229? I have a P229 with the Short Reset Trigger and man is it nice!

I shot the SP2022 multiple times and I have a Walther P99 AS, pretty similar to the Canik TP9 DA.
The SP2022 is a very soft shooter, SA and DA both very nice; no chance to stay open after the last round with a thumbs forward grip; the magazine pad is part of the grip which in my opinion is not that good in a full size gun.
Probably the Canik is the better overall choice.
I'm sure the Steyr is very nice and it seems also an incredible sturdy design but I'd take it as a second pistol.
How about a Grand Power K100?

.
I am curious what your issue is with Glocks...are they expensive there?
Its combination of more things, something similiar to CZ. They are more or less on same price level but others offers more + Glock is for me more work tool. I would pick glock for job or mayabe EDC. But my first gun should have more personal character and since its more for sport (self defence is over here more excuse than reasson, but future isnt that bright) im also looking for something what helps me more in beginnngs. Also i like "inovations" like for example PX4 Storm (out of budget more than Sig 320).

Steyr had and probaly have poor marketing and there is just few of them in shops, but i like that they are diffrent more or less for practical reassons.

bannockburn: Yeah i like P226 look and even did consider Norinco NP22 clone, but P22x are crazy expensive over here

5-SHOTS: Yeah, canik is probably best value, but theyr local distributor is little bit odd and i have some worries about spare parts.
I did saw K100 few times, but its price is wild over here, meaning its crazy cheap and crazy expensive for same version in diffrent shops, it kinda reminds me our local factory Alfa proj which makes Cz75 based guns but theirs quality control isnt that good (according to local forums) also in quick look i didnt find much reviews, but i guess i will give it second look.

EDIT: Huh, that K100 look interesting...

I have a Canik tp9sfx. Sweet pistol with a great trigger out of the box. Not a carry size but super great at the range. Mine had the best trigger out of the box of any striker fired gun I had shot. Also I put quite a few rounds through my Canik with no need for extra parts!

Are you able to get Arex pistols there? While I have not shot one they seam to get great reviews.

Idahou: Do you have a preference for a DA/SA striker-fired, versus a SA striker-fired gun?

If you want Both features in a striker gun....can you afford, and easily find/order a Walther P99 AS?
The SA can be decocked into DA for the first shot. And also....the 'stacking' in DA (increased 'felt' pressure on trigger) is proportionate, a steady ratio, as you pull it in DA.

This SA or DA choice gives it a large advantage over the PPQ, in my opinion. If you don't like the PPQ then maybe it's not a good idea?

bannockburn: do you have all of those types? I've had a P229 (Really like the DAO trigger: actually feels light, and So Smooooth), still have the CZ PCR.
Heck, the PCR and 'true Czech' VZ-58 rifle are such a Very high quality pair of guns.

@Idahou Are you seeing any ammunition shortages?
Hopefully not for being near the center of the Sellier & Bellot universe.

But, mostly as, since you are seeking something fun to shoot rather than a carry piece, there are a number of interesting .32acp and .380acp handguns that can be a hoot to shoot. Walthers, and the like. Perhaps a nice used HSc, or one of the Spanish pistols.

Now, if 9x19 is the desired thing, shopping for a used, classic,SIG P210 might meet the mark.

Frankl03 - Only Rex avalaible is delta, which is imho ugly as hell in wrong way, and Alpha competition out of budget. Zero 1 look great, but it isnt in stock for long time.

bannockburn - Nice collection and dont worry, im dreaming about guns to the point it annoys me :D

Ignition Override - DA/SA vs SF... i dont have real preferences and i tink both have its adventage. But from experience with Cz 75 and P 10 i preferer smooth, lighter trigger - i was able to shoot better from P10 right in first shots despite fact that half of my palm was hanging under small grip. Also im already used for Israeli style gun carry - without round in chamber and racking slide while unholtering. But i also find decocker like good safety tool
P99 is edge of budget and im honestly not sure in what its better than Canik + that Walter logo irritates me :D

CapnMac - No problems about ammo over here, i even think its little bit cheaper than last year.
.32acp and .380acp are actually more expensive here than 9 mm luger, they arent much popular over. So only other option is with lower cost is 22Lr. I planed to start with that, but that was few months back and even if i do think its usable in self-defence (in reliable package like TX22) i still would step into 9mm waters later and i plans more guns, so its more reasonable to start with 9mm
Czech market with used guns is actually pretty small and Sig P210 would be expensive as unique piece, i found just magazines for scary high price of 120 USD

Btw i did look at that Grand Power K100 and already remeber why i drop interest before - gun itself is interesting, but according to local forums quality control of Grand Power is really random, so you have same chance to get good or terrible piece. Also it needs more cleaning, that would be not problem - im used to clean guns after range time, but its allegedly very unreliable just after 50 shots without cleaning - thats very limiting and even i dont consider self defence need as primar parametr i do want gun which keeps functional for longer time.

I have the Grand Power Q100, the striker fired version of the K100, which is less expensive than the K100. That's why I suggested to take a look at it.
In my experience it's an outstanding gun. Scary accurate, soft shooter, no cast parts, very very tight fit.
I shot hundreds rounds without full cleaning and without problems. Grand Powers like to run well lubed but that's all. The chamber is stepped exactly to keep the pistol clean and it's amazing how the rifling and chamber of the barrel stay clean even after hundreds rounds; all the pistol stays surprisingly clean.

All that said, I still think the Canik is the better choice for a first pistol owner.

Well, it looks like Slovakia and Czech distribution of Gran Power guns is diffrent from others. In another words, they probably export the good ones and rest is going to us and Slovaks. I actually heard some similiars complain about Stiborg SMG. I will keep that gun in mind and consider it later, but yes, canik is look like more reasonable choice

Btw, we got statment from government that gun permit exams are now allowed, but in typical manners it looks its still no go, because our indoor ranges are closed (and part of exam is target shooting and gun manipulation) and i dont have outdoor range in my district. So mayabe i will get my permit sooner or mayabe dont :D

I'm a Glock fan myself and believe your Special Forces that served with the US / Nato in Iraq & Afghanistan all carried Glocks much to the chagrin of CZ.

Unless you can drive over to the factory for parts, I would avoid the Steyr pistol. Steyr has a habit of disappearing in the US market and I imagine are not much better overseas either.

This CZ85 looks to be in your price range.
11900Kc / $553.87 USD
https://www.armyarms.cz/cz-85-e3002.html

Of the ones you listed, I would go with the Sig, XD / HS, Jericho 941 (steel frame), then the Canik.

Something to keep in mind - commonality of magazines, gun parts (extractors, recoil, springs, etc) and ammo with your friends / greater shooting community is a good idea when things are restricted.

If CZ / Glock handguns are common and everywhere, that means parts, magazines, sights, etc are common / everywhere. Prices are usually lower for those accessories as well. The ability to hand a friend a spare magazine in a fight, because he has the same gun as you, is a good thing.

Glock or CZ will be my possible future EDC if it comes to that, but for now im looking for gun to enjoy.
As far i know our SFs indeed uses glock but mostly units working with allies, P10 is now issued in some units and some use CZ phantom. I have no doubts that both CZs and Glocks are great service handguns

That CZ85 is used gun sold by, for me unknown store, and its almost same price like some other new guns.

I do keep in mind that argument about magazine, but for now its that situation absolutly unreal - this is country where even bank robbers have just toy guns or fingers in pocket (mostly because punisment for criminal act with lethal weapon is much higher) so that currently doesnt affect my choice.

Yeah, PX-3 was actually my pick for second gun when i planned to get 22lr as first gun, you know to somehow ballance my firepower :D But Tokarev ammo is actualy almost on same price as cheap 7,62x39 and funny enough, SA vz. 58 is in price just little bit higher so i will get that as second gun. Also there are reports about problems with spare parts for PX-3 because dimensions are diffrent from P226
