My wife and I got some new outdoors equipment and that means that my gun and ammo closet is being taken over by it. I have a space about 36 inches long give or take (could go longer if it wasn't taller than 36 inches, give or take) between my reloading nook and the tv stand.

I've been brainstorming some alternative storage means for that space. I have several long guns, multiple handguns, and a couple of thousand rounds of various calibers. I don't want to break the bank, and don't want to put a safe or RSC there. If it looks nice, the better. I want to be able to lock it and hope the weight of the ammo will make it too hard for a burglar to lug out of the basement.

I am considering a roller tool storage cabinet, some kind of footlocker (the ones I've seen are too short for long guns), some kind of wardrobe (maybe build a false back in it?) and was hoping to see what ideas y'all may have or have used.

I just have a basic gun cabinet that bolts to the floor. It is not ipervious by any means, but - it is OK enough.

Check out any factory's that are getting torn down. I picked up a large electrical switching cabinet, it's about 18" deep 4' wide & about 5' tall.
After I stripped out all of the electrical stuff I put in a shelf & I store my ammo boxes in the bottom & put my rifles on the shelf & still have room to put a pistol rack on the heavy door. It has two latches top & bottom & a place to lock on the handle on the outside.
It's big enough I can get about 20 to 30 rifles in it with room to spare.

Ah, an electrical cabinet. A friend of mine had an old large uninterruptible power supply from a big computer operation.

We gutted and made a 'gun safe' out of it.

I kept the original meters and indicator lites functioning for looks and a small transformer bolted to the steel front to make it hum a bit.

Nobody ever asks or even gets close to it...
