Am I alone in having my CCW permit but no gun?

Just wondering if there are others out there that are in my situation. I know that many have the opposite problem.

Though, I do have a wheel barrow that I have outfitted with an all-terrain knobby tire, dual Surefire lights, and full camouflage. ;) So I'll be good to go as soon as I purchase a gun.

oddly, i have noticed in the last 4 or 5 years that 1 in 3 or so who take my class don't apply before the time limit & phone for a 'New CCW Cert." odd, no?
( i tell them meet me at the range & prove you still are knowledgeable & $50 to reissue & no one cares-they pay .). sorry about not being on target with your question, but thought it might be~relevant. ps. many other CT instructors have noticed this also....i wonder if it's a local thing or more spread out? as to having a permit & no gun is like having a drivers lincense & no car. you are ready when the moment comes.

My wife and I were slow shoppers until about two months after we got our CCW/CPLs, then she was assaulted by a club-wielding nut case in a public park -- the "safe" kind, near a police station. When he saw me coming to her aid, he backed off, so no one was hurt, but we bought guns and started carrying them soon after that.

Time Between CCW and First Pistole

I got my first permit in 1993 in PA, based on the fact that the paperwork - even in PA - was the "long lead item".

Got my first carry gun in 2004, after renewing my PA in 1998, and getting my first Florida in 2000. Renewed the Florida in 2005. Will do it again in 2010.

I got mine in 1994, and had guns then. then I got married and had a child. I could not train myself at that time to keep things put away, so I got rid of everything and took up another hobby. For about 5 years I had nothing. I renewed my CCW while not having anything, but know I would want it someday...I am back into the swing of things, and have no troubles keeping things safe and secure.

i mentioned this awhile ago, found out my aunt has a (wow) MASSACHUSETTS
carry permit, has had it for years, never owned a gun. (my uncle does keep rifles and shotguns in their house, he has hunted)
she does go shooting at a gun club sometimes though, so she gets practice.

i think my aunt is finally getting closer to buying, mainly she used to work at a bank, and has always been a strong supporter of RBKA, in the sense she believes we're all much better off armed, but then she turns into the typical fat lazy American and doesn't get around to getting the gun, is worried it'll be too big or something.
i did show her some smaller guns online, and have her thinking more about it, but i think she likes having the permit more than she wants a gun.
silly, at the very least.

uh....

yeah. what?
hahahahaha

I did get the firearm before the CHL license. However, I was a member of the NRA for 6 months before getting the first firearm. The law in TX for CHL has changed recently. It may be that my father, ret-military, may get his CHL without ownership since the CHL is free or discounted.

Here in MA my license doubles as a CCW (it's called an LTC here - license to carry). I just got it a few weeks ago and I don't own any firearms yet so I'm in the same boat :) I was pretty surprised how easily I could get my LTC here. There was no special application, interview, nothing. I just submitted an application and got it. I always heard horror stories...

Here in NY (at least in my county) once you were approved for the CCW (same as MA it's the only thing you need to own a handgun) you had to put a firearm on the permit within 30 days from issue. I got some obscure letter in the mail from the Judge saying I was approved, and nothing else. I didn't know I needed to just take that letter to the dealer and they would issue me a coupon to take to the Sherrif who then would issue me a new coupon and a Permit along with a 2nd card listing the firearm(s) to take back to the dealer who I could then take posession of the gun.

So over here there's no real choice about waiting to buy one, as I was told, use it or lose it...

In Mass, it all depends on what town you live in... obviously you're not in Brookline or Boston. Things are much easier in the western part of the state.

In CO, when you get a CCW, you may also, at the sheriffs discretion, be added to the state database of sex offenders, wanted felons, and other "persons of interest".
(/f)* CO now being a blue state, when the authorities come around to confiscate your weapons, you'd best have at least a cheapo Bryco to turn in, otherwise they'll be water boarding you at the secret detention facility under DIA until you tell them where you hid your CC piece. (/f)

This is true I suppose. I live within about 15 miles of Boston though, that's why I was so surprised.

Man, does this forum not have a "Reply to post" option? Or is my browser screwed up?

When I took the class several years ago there were about 10 people in the class. 3 didn't own a handgun yet and 1 only had a .22, so I'm guessing you aren't alone.

In Ca. you have to list the firearms you want to be licensed to carry- and you're only allowed to carry those. I don't know (yet), but I believe you need to qualify with each weapon as well.

I got my carry license in May and my first gun in August, so I was in the same situation as you, Harvster. I also have a driver's license and no car. Best to be prepared.

I'm paying for my fiancee to get her ccw on her 21st birthday next month. Yet because she still lives at home (parents income helps financial aid for college) and her parents are dead set against her owning a firearm, she wont be able to until she graduates school next year. On the bright side they never said a negative thing about knives and in FL a CCW allows you to carry any kind of knife you want ;)

I had that situation for about a couple days because I had to special order my first gun. Right after I placed the order I took the course for a CCW.... by the time the permit came in a couple weeks later the gun hadn't come in.

It came in a couple days after I got the permit.

Well it's nice to see that I'm not completely alone in this. Hopefully, in the very near future, I will be buying a S&W 642. It seems many folks have found it to be a decent carry gun.

Harvster, I hope you do get a 642. It's a great carry gun, and don't forget to join the 642 Club if you haven't already.

(Do I get bonus points for recruiting?)

I live in CT and have my permit, but no gun. I'm still a student (in Western NY), and when I'm home I stay with my parents. My mom refuses to allow a gun in the house, so I'm forced to rent from my local range.

As soon as I move out (hopefully in May), I will be buying one.

Holy gunsmoke.

Thanks for the discussion guys, I wouldn't have thought this situation existed, or was REALLY rare, but it's not. Hope everyone finds the perfect carry pistol at a great price!

Glock 19: what God intended you to carry.

My Girfriend has both a CT and FL permit and,,,, NO GUN!

She worries about carrying although she is considering getting one. I have offered, but she has declined thusfar.

I did not yet own a handgun at the time I got my first CCW many years ago(but I did own a shotgun).

My reasoning was that the state laws (not Ohio) on carrying an arguably loaded and/or arguably accessible firearm in a vehicle were unclear but did not apply if you had a CCW, so having one removed that risk.
