Hi all,

I'm going to be moving to NC next year and would appreciate your advice on ccw permits and general purchasing.

As I understand it I will be able to purchase long guns, but won't be eligible for a ccw permit until I am a citizen. I saw NC accepts ccw permits from certain other states though. Would I be able to get my ccw in a state that NC recognises and be able to carry?

Thanks in advance and apologies if this is in the wrong sub forum.

Once you have an address in NC, and an intention to stay here, you are a "resident".

There is no waiting period, and proving "residency" can be as simple as showing a utility bill in your name.

If you have a permit from another state, it won't hurt, but it won't make much difference either way

Thanks Snyper, much appreciated.

I'm not yet a citizen though, my wife is and I'll get that status about 3yrs after we settle I think. I'm curious to see if there are any ways to shorten the wait by going the reciprocity route?

I don't see how that could help, since you won't be a resident of the other state after moving here.

I know you'd be required to get a valid NC driver's license.

It's going to take an NC lawyer to give you a real answer.

There's been a lawsuit filed (I think) to change the law requiring US citizenship but I don't know the status

Thanks again, I appreciate you making the time to help me. I just want everything to be above board.

Go to handgunlaw.us and you'll see what NC accepts asfor reciprocity. Then go to one of those States and see if you can get a nonresident. Start with Virginia; they are one of the easiest. Former military can get a permit by mail with a DD214
