Ok, I have a 10 mile drive to work every morning and sometimes I think about the weirdest (may be weird to some, probably not to y'all) things and this is what I was thinking about today, but a little history first...

Couple of weeks ago David and I were out shooting with the .50 cal club. He was shooting his 38/357 and asked if I wanted to shoot it. He was out of .38's and that's all I've ever shot out of it. Decided to try the .357 and was pleasantly surprised by the fact that while it was a more powerful load it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be (I have weak wrists [carpal tunnel] and worry about recoil) or what my perception of it was...

I commented to David that it seemed wierd to me that the .357 was a stronger round than the .38 seeing how generally speaking the higher the number the more powerfull the round. So he proceeds to explain to me why it is the way it is, although I'm not sure I remember EXACTLY all he said..

HUH???? (understood the technical part of what he was saying just didn't get the logic AT ALL)

Then a week or so ago I'm watching the history channel and there was a program on and ended up talking about why the Army ended up favoring Colt over S & W (I think it was Modern Marvels) and it got me to briefly thinking aobut our prior conversation...

Jump to this morning... Thinking about the upcoming shoot and what ammo is still needed, .38/.357 is one so of course my mind went right back to the original conversation and the one question that I kept asking David...

"Who's the rocket scientist that came up with this mess, and why didn't they just call the .38 a .357 and the .357 a .357 magnum?"

So I ask ya... Am I becoming an in-curable gunny for thinking about something as silly as this on my way to work this morning? :D

The renaming calibers differently from thier actual size is marketing.

Just think if Dirty Harry said this:

...'This here's a Four Twenty Nine Magnum...'

A lot of romance would be lost if it was a 452 Colt Peacemaker

And, a .357 Special just sounds.....wrong.

Preacherman - COOL, I could think of a lot worse things to be in-curable of... :D

Kamicosmos - You're right, that would sound ridiculous coming from Dirty Harry... LOL

and while I agree that .357 special sounds pretty dorky, .357 magnum doesn't sound bad at all...

Yep. There's no known cure. Fortunately, it's a disease with no adverse symptoms and an excellent prognosis. Trust me, eh? I played doctor when I was a kid.

Black Snowman - does having my first "fail to fire" dream count, cause if so... Been there done that... Luckily upon analyzation of the dream I found out that it was operator error (was right after I got my first revolver) and was forgetting to pull the hammer back...

Standing Wolf - THAT'S my kinda diagnosis... :D

There is only one way to see if you have an incurable case or not. You are curable only if you can glance through a Speer reloading manual in less than a half hour. :neener:
