Am I the most ironic gun owner ever?

dmw16,

No, if you take some time and read you'll find others who are much the same. You'll find many more who have similar philosophy, but didn't vote the same.

One of the problems we have around here is the assumption that everyone that agrees on RKBA agrees on other issues. The RKBA is too diverse a community for that to be true.

Now we have a huge number of new gunowners that never had a serious thought about owning a gun before last November. New gunowners that may have voted for Obama because of other issues they thought were as important or more important than RKBA. Perhaps who thought Heller was the end of the debate, but who may come here and learn the issue is more complex than they thought.

Since we've been crowing about how guns have been flying off the shelves and how many new gunowners that represents perhaps we'd better learn to welcome new people and give them the opportunity to learn from us instead of being foolish enough to alienate them.

Seems to me that a good definition of "libertarian" is "social liberal, economic conservative".

I would not say that libertarians are socially liberal. That means they would, for example, endorse a pro-gay agenda.

They should instead be socially neutral, meaning they don't care one way or another about whether you are gay or not.

I would take socially neutral further and say they are socially abstinent. The Libertarian goal is to leave you alone and not pass any legislation regarding the issues whatsoever. It's not that they don't care if you are gay or not, I'm sure there are homophobic libertarians. But they believe that they have a duty simply to not interfere.

At least you "seem" to know that most pro-gun people would / should "flame" you!
The only thing more important than the 2nd? The 1st!( at least that's what this country's REAL leaders knew & were not afraid to say!

Wait, let me get this straight, if OBAMA signs an AWB it will be GWs fault? Thats gotta be one of the funniest things I have ever heard.

Yes I believe GW's policies and decisions were so faulty that it really forced the voting public to swing all the way over to BO. That is actually not a theory but has been proven by the election, John McCain never stood a chance. So we can can all blame GW's incompetence and stubbornness for anything we have coming our way. Republicans really screwed the pooch when the best we could come up with was McCain/Palin.

This liberal/libertarian thing came up recently in another thread.

politicalcompass.org has a cool and reliable test for comparing your political views with those of others.

However, many people get into "liberalism" (present-day, agreed-upon definition) because they are "free thinking," "against the norm," "change needs to happen," "individualistic," etc...the problem is that for the most part, liberals are for a few freedoms and usually only nominally (abortion*, immigration, speech) and don't get the fact that by empowering big government further, even if the goal is noble, you are only setting yourself up for lost freedoms and inefficiency in the future.

Heck, I'd love to see top-down solutions to major problems we see as a nation face come straight from the federal government...but I believe nearly any problem solved by big gov leads to them possessing more power and screwing something else up. Heck, that's IF they even solve it...

As far as the abortion thing, myself being a libertarian, I see abortion as "should be illegal" because I see the fetus/embryo as a PERSON in and of itself...Ron Paul (I know, not a capital-L libertarian) gave a great interview where he said that if you believe the fetus is a person, "the right to abortion" as a freedom of individual choice is like presenting "the right to beat your kids within your own home" as a property right issue.

So we can can all blame GW's incompetence and stubbornness for anything we have coming our way.

We should look at the silver lining...

Racial equality is the one real thing improved by George Bush. Without the great screwball that is George Bush, America would not have its first black president. I think Bush ranks right up there with the Emancipation Proclamation, and should be inducted into the NAACP's hall of fame.
