I'm currently working on a precision AR project and ran across the Ameetec side charging upper. I thought this would be a particularly good idea for an AR that is going to be wearing a scope all the time but I can't find any info about it. Does anyone here have any experience with these uppers? Are they well built? How does the charging handle/bolt carrier assembly work?

Fulton has also been selling something like this for a while. It's looked intriguing, but the high cost of the bolt carrier and upper receiver put me off. From what I recall, it looked as the the standard bolt carrier was modified to include a handle sticking out the right side. The charging handle would then reciprocate with the bolt carrier. It looks like the dust cover is lost in the conversion, and whatever reliability gains are made via having a directly-attached charging handle (easier to stomp the action open to clear a jam) would be lost to increased debris entering the action.

Here's a pic from the Fulton web site:

Looks like the Ameetec version retains the brass deflector that the FUlton unit deletes.

I, too, would like to hear from anyone who's tried either the Fulton or Ameetec version.
