There are plenty of problem threads on the various 1911 forums. The issues seem to be centered around the commander size and now reports on the new officer size are looking the same as the issues with the commanders. The full size models seem to get good reviews.
I own a commander model and had massive failures with mine right out of the box. I never got to shoot a full mag of ammo before I had to send mine back for service. Common issues are that frames are incorrectly cut, feed ramps are out of spec, mag catches are not fitted correctly, and slide stops are out of spec. Tons of posts about people's first round nosediving. From what I hear, warranty centers are keeping very busy with repairs on the commander and officer size models.
Search independent forums for more info. That would be my recommendation. I was told by a company rep that the problems I experienced with my gun were because of a bad batch that escaped QC. In my attempt to help future buyers, I started a thread for people who had issues to post their serial number so that the "bad batch" could be identified through serial number range. I was promptly banned from the forum for attempting this. Leads me to believe that the "bad batch" excuse was just a way to save face. I have a feeling once people started posting their serial numbers that had problems, there wouldn't be any "bad batch", but problems across the board. That's just my "educated guess" though, since I was banned and the thread locked before the theory could be put to the test.
