The latest edition of American Handgunner magazine has an article titled "Beer Budget 1911s" on page 50. Metro Arms, American Classic II, is on page 88. The author liked everything about it, except the grips. The author states that he "eventually bought this gun". Pretty good praise, huh?

I just bought one on monday, and while I haven't shot it yet, in feel and build quality it feels like a much higher dollar 1911.

The one super annoying thing about American Handgunner is that I always seem to get my subscription issue two weeks after it's on the newstands. :fire:

The biggest downside to magazine reviews is they are rarely negative and normally the next page is an ad from the same company.

Everyone I personally know who owns the ACll has nothing but praise for the price and quality.

However one of the THR mods had one malfunction at some event he was participating in but he did not go into details of the malfunction. I assume (by his comment) he was rather perturbed.

Everything can break or malfunction and need fixing.

I have enjoyed the ACll and trust mine to do what it was designed to do. Someone else's luck might not be the same.

There are plenty of problem threads on the various 1911 forums. The issues seem to be centered around the commander size and now reports on the new officer size are looking the same as the issues with the commanders. The full size models seem to get good reviews.

I own a commander model and had massive failures with mine right out of the box. I never got to shoot a full mag of ammo before I had to send mine back for service. Common issues are that frames are incorrectly cut, feed ramps are out of spec, mag catches are not fitted correctly, and slide stops are out of spec. Tons of posts about people's first round nosediving. From what I hear, warranty centers are keeping very busy with repairs on the commander and officer size models.

Search independent forums for more info. That would be my recommendation. I was told by a company rep that the problems I experienced with my gun were because of a bad batch that escaped QC. In my attempt to help future buyers, I started a thread for people who had issues to post their serial number so that the "bad batch" could be identified through serial number range. I was promptly banned from the forum for attempting this. Leads me to believe that the "bad batch" excuse was just a way to save face. I have a feeling once people started posting their serial numbers that had problems, there wouldn't be any "bad batch", but problems across the board. That's just my "educated guess" though, since I was banned and the thread locked before the theory could be put to the test.

Thanks for the post! I have kinda wanted a Commander or officer size 1911....Guess I will pass. Wish I liked the finish on the RIA better.

American Classic II. Got one and like it a lot.

I normally shoot SSP in IDPA with various S&W M&P pistols, but just for the sake of chang, I have used my ACII a few times in CDP. Works great.

Yep.

I still need to send it back to the factory to see if they can correct the issues, but the RIA Government Model we also used turned out to be a much better pistol.

Derek thanks for the thread review; I had wondered what happened!! My ACll is full size which I use for a hunting back up for dangerous rabbits and pigs! Cost of ammo in 45ACP has kept my round count down but like I said mine has been good to/for me. The GSG 1911 that I also have really has been problematic with light primer strikes.?? But it really is a different animal than the ACll. Guess I will pass on the Commander size.
Is the American Classic Commander worth the cost as an entry-level piece? Not in my opinion. For the cost of making the American Classic actually useful, a better 1911 could be purchased.
