I hate 3 dot sights and plan on getting the Ameriglo pro idot sights for my m&p. What I can't decide on is:

1: U notch or classic square notch. I think I'm leaning towards the U notch but would love to hear everyone's opinion. Eg accuracy, speed lining up, follow ups, etc.

2: Not sure if i want the orange colored front sight or the green lumi (yellow) colored front sight. Has anyone had any experience with both colors? Which is better to see in daylight and low light? I'm not worried about how the 2 colors match up against one another in no light conditions because that's what the tritium lamps are for.

And any other info or experience you may have with the ameriglo pro idots that you'd like to pass along would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Given I consider my Shield to be a carry gun. I went with the u notch for my Shield. Very quick to pick up and much easier on my eyes. When I shoot this gun I tend to do more point shooting and this sight aids me in this. In the dark, the dot on dot works very well. I went orange for the front just because it is very easy to pick up when shooting outside.

I have two sets of the regular I-Dots, the U-notch on my M&P Shield and the square notch on my Glock 19. I thought I would like the U-notch better, on the theory that the circle of the front sight dot would nestle in the notch neatly and line up faster, but in practice it's a wash, and I actually like the square notch a little better.

Would you say that the U notch is a wash because the notch is wider than the dot and the dot doesn't fully fit inside? It looks to me that there is space around the dot even when it sits inside the u notch. In other words the u notch looks too big/wide. Is this how you perceive it? And is that why you prefer the square rear instead of the rounded U notch rear? Does the front dot fit better inside the square rear notch?

Also would you mind positing some pics of the first person view when sighting down the gun, one pic of the U notch vs another pic with the square notch? I would love to see a side by side comparison!

The u notch, with a round front sight, has plenty of room around it when properly aligned.
What are you using the gun for? At my range I see people shooting their carry gun and lining up their sights as if they are in a bullseye match. An aggressor will seldom stop an advance so you can get a good sight picture.
My Shield is totally a carry gun. I never really take the time to see the sights. I try to keep all my focus on the threat. The orange front ball comes up and the gun goes bang.

If you are just going to shoot holes in paper targets and strive for the smallest group possible, I would stick with all black sights and a six o'clock hold.
Just my 2¢

I've got both the U-notch and the square. Both are nice, it looks a little more "open" with the square notch, but I really don't have a preference either way. I use the standard I-Dot, I never did care too much for the colored front versions.

Would everyone in this thread mind posting sight pictures of their setup? I'm curious to see how all the different options look. If not, no big deal.

The Trijicon HD sights are along the same lines but I like them a little better. They have just two vials in the rear, no accent rings, so they are not as distracting as normal 3 dot config.

Ive had both the orange and the yellow/green Ameriglo fronts. The yellow/green went back almost immediately. All my go-to guns sport the orange fronts now. The yellow/green washed out for me in the house against our white walls and incandescent lighting (which gives off a very yellow hue). The orange works very well in every lighting situation I've viewed it in.

I'm sorry I don't have pictures, but I think I like the square notch better because it's actually a very wide notch. The U-notch is better than a narrow rear square notch, but turns out for me just widening that rear sight notch was better than either.
