ok silly question but would like to know....

How does the velocity, knockdown power and penetrarion (body armor piercing) compare on these 4 calibers?

I was told that a 22 win mag would penetrate a bullet proof vest so I assume that 17 hmr does and FN and HK developed the 5.7 and 4.6 to penetrate body armor. So my question is how do the 17hmr and the 17 mach 2 compare? I know nothing about the 17hmr and the 17 mach 2. ANy help would be appreciated.

this page will tell you all you need to know about the rimfires. I seriously doubt a rimfire could break through body armour, but if one could, i would say it would be a 17 hmr, 25 grn , out of a 24 inch bbl.

the 5.7 is designed for penetration, it has the steel core, and is a heavier bullet, and it is centerfire.
4.6 is a 17 cal bullet, depends really on the cartridge you put it in.
a 17 remmy or 17 mach 4, centerfires, i bet would both penetrate a vest.

With full auto, even 22LR can go through body armor. There was a drum fed 22LR that fired at 1200 rpm and could supposedly eat through vests very quickly. American Arms 180? I cant remember the exact name.

Velocity is what goes through vests so I would think the 17HMR would probably have a pretty good shot at it. Dunno what kind of trauma would happen on the other side though, as it is little more than an airgun pellet.

high velocity bullets with little mass will go through soft armor. TO go through ceramics and other hard armor, you need a bullet with more mass. This is why a .308 AP will pierce through armor better than a .223 AP round.
