Have a 648 6” coming. For those who have one, what seems to be the most accurate ammo you’ve used? I know 22 mag isn’t known for one hole, but I’d like to reliably hunt the infamous tin can at 50yds or so.

I’ll wind up trying any I can find at some point, just curious what your experience has been. Thanks in advance.

I don't own a 648, but do have a few 22 mag firearms. A common trait among them- as you suggest- is ammo sensitivity. For me, 40 gr or heavier bullets seem to generally be more accurate. The standard Win 40 gr hollow point has usually worked well, think this may have been the "original" 22 Mag loading. The Federal 50 gr is pretty consistent. Also, recently have used some Aguila 40 gr sp, which was pretty good (previously not a fan of Aguila) - my partner's revolver especially favors this.
Sadly in recent 2-3 years, have been shooting 22 mag less and less due to ammo availability and I can reload 38 Spl for less.....

Mine does great with Winchester 40 grain jacketed hollow points. They also shoot great from my SW 51 and 651 wmr revolvers. I shoot CCI WRFs (shorter case with 45 grain bullet) in them for a quieter, lower powered experience.

Picked it up today, everything looks in order. Hoping to try it at the range tomorrow. All I expect is to pop cans at 50yds, maybe the occasional 100yd can.

Side note, when he brought it out for me to inspect, three old guys immediately started bothering me about buying it, kept getting the “how much” repeatedly, i told them I’ll start the bidding at $25k, shop owner got a chuckle out of it. The flies didn’t find it as amusing.

The makes featuring true jacketed bullets are best in my experience.
I’ve had good luck with Remington 40gr JHP (Speer bullet!), Winchester 40jhp and FMJ (the original loads), PMC, and Armscor 40gr JHP.
I’ve had good accuracy with the Armscor component bullets in both.22Hornet and.218Bee.

CCI are plated and don’t generally shoot as well. But also tend to be cheaper by $1-$2/50. They shoot “good enough “.
I liked the old .22mag Winchester 45gr Dynapoints. They had just enough power to barely cycle the bolt on a Remington 597M. I haven’t seen any in years. It’s my all time favorite for head shooting squirrels. But not accurate enough past 50yds...

Generally speaking, I've always had good luck with CCI rimfire ammunition. It has been mostly with 22RF.

Recently, I bought an S&W 48 with a 8-3/8" barrel. I've bought some CCI 22 WMR for it to try.

Besides, not much else was available anyway.

I'll agree, every gun has its own appetite for rimfire ammunition.

Nice!
I have an older Taurus 8-shot 941 4” that I don’t shoot a whole lot, and two S&W Model 48’s, a 6” (pre lock) and a 4” (with lock).

Like the others said, ammo accuracy is hit and miss with .22 Mags ( no pun intended). The 6” likes Win and Rem 40 gr jhp, the 4” likes Federal 50 grain jhp, Win 40 gr jhp and CCI 40 gr Maxi-Mags. None really like the “green” loads from CCI.

The guns have zero recoil, but do produce a surprisingly loud report and a pretty good fireball when shot in low light.

Let us know how it shoots for you when you get a chance to take it out. :)

Stay safe.

I don't know about out of a pistol but I know that the standard 45gr WRF load expands nicely out of a rifle. I tested several 2yrs ago in SIMTEST, including the Gold Dot "short barrel" load.

Did manage to try it out, range was muddy as could be btw.

Anyway, the Hornady 30gr vmax, Remington 40gr fmj, and Federal champion 40gr were a death sentence on a golf ball at 50yds. Tin cans and bottles, any of the eight different ammos I tried hit every time.

I didn’t expect to hit golf balls repeatedly, but I’m thrilled. Trigger in single action is greased glass smooth and really light, double action isn’t bad either.

I believe I’m going to put a scope on and see what happens at 100yds. Why not, should be fun.
