Recommendation? I'm not familar with pistol ammo what would shoot good out of this mostly just a range toy so cheaper the better. Lever revolution ? Cowboy loads? Modern loads?

You can shoot any ammo in it, for personal defense I would use PDX-1. Shop around, there's plenty of new ammo coming out for it all the time.

You can load your own .45LC for it and .410 if you have a press for it.

Hpr ammo any good? grains should I get? What's the price range supposed to be on 45 ammo these days with shipping it's about 1 a round for this stuff the cheapest I'm finding

Sometimes you can find legitimately reloaded 45 Colt at gun shows.

Candelas had this package of 12 45 Colt and 2.5" 410 defensive ammo.

Try Gun Broker or Auction Arms, just remember tis the season and everyone else is looking also. Most places will probably be sold out until after the holidays.

I also had a hard time finding .45 Colt locally and at the gun shows. Finally found some online at a decent price and stocked up on it.

If I was using a Circuit Judge for self defence, I'd load it with a good HP .45LC load (Speer, Buffalo Bore, etc.). I've heard too many reports of marginal effectiveness on the .410 buck or hybrid loads to put any faith in them. For a range toy, look at the widely available "cowboy" loads for the .45LC or whatever you can find in .410 ga.

Look at hickok45's YouTube on The Judge and various shot number's effectiveness. When you see those holes, especially the nice spread of #4 buck, you know that's gotta hurt. You don't have to blow through to the other side, you know.

Clearly, the 45 Colt for the cost conscious is a reloader's gun, while the Judge with its .454 cylinder throats will probably not be known for match grade accuracy.

The cheaper cowboy lead ammo is pretty mild, so the added drama of the .410 will probably be more fun to shoot.

If you are going to be shooting 45 Colt out of this thing, learn to reload.
Store bought 45 Colt will cost you about $1/round. You can reload one for about .17 cents. 3 boxes of 50 and you have recovered the cost of the reloading equipment.

I don't trust buffalo bore in a judge or anything else it has not been labeled for. I saw a uberti revolver that had the top strap blow off, supposedly from buffalo bore 45 lc. As for .410 I use federal 3" steel #7. Even with the choke the pattern will be blown past 25 yards, but steel shot will give the highest pellet count over lead. With the choke off its good to about 10 feet ( 13' if you hold it at arms length and lean forwards!)

Even with its limitations I like my circuit judge as a saddle gun as its double action trigger and low muzzle blast are great for shooting from horseback.
