Is there any ammo that i should stay away from with regard to my new p3at? In other words, i am learning that some ammo is hotter and I know the Kel Tec is not a heavy duty gun, so if there is some ammo that i would be better off staying away from, I would appreciate your input. For practice, i will shoot a variety of less hot/less expensive loads, but for self defence, I want a good powerful load, but not something that is damaging. I saw a load at a local gun shop that specifically says "don't use in kel tec p3at".

what ever fits shoot it...keltec does not recommed a STEADY diet of +P...but because of price , is not a problem for me.....gpr

I have had FTF problems with my KT P-32 and Speer Gold Dot ammo. Winchester Silver Tip HP ammo seems to work the best. Fiocchi HP ammo also works flawlessly in my KT P-32.

I've not shot JHP ammo in mine but there have been some comments on THR about it not feeding properly.

My P32 has a stronger recoil spring and carries the hot S+B european ball ammo in it.

There are three spring weights to choose from in that platform--9, 11 and 13# springs. The 9 is stock, I use the 11# with the S+B as it throws the brass the same as the stock spring with standard velocity ammo thus it slows the slide to the same velocity [ or close ] as the standard fodder it is designed for.

My P3AT has ate everything I've tried in it with no problems. I shoot 50 rounds of reloads a week through mine for pratice, and carry Gold Dots.

None of the steel cased ammo (Wolf, Silver Bear, Brown Bear, etc.) works in my P3AT. CCI aluminum blazer works fine as does all the brass cased ammo and reloads I've tried.

What I find very hard to understand is the P3AT has extraction issues with steel cased ammo whereas my wife's Beretta 86 Cheetah which lacks an extractor loves the stuff.

Magsafe isn't a go. Their websight says that. They destroyed a KT pistol. That fine with me as I think their ammo is trash anyway.
Their is no offical +P in 380 or 32
I use S&B in all my 3 KT for practice and Corbon DPX in 380 and Corbon HP in 32. Mag tec has a +P on one of their ammo. Advertise junk. Corbon 90gr HP will put it away. As I said their is no +P SAMMI haas never set requirments for a +P like they did for 38,9mm 45 and the others.

supposedly steel cased ammo is a no-no but ive never had a problem federal hydra-shock and its steel cased.

Don't confuse a silver colored case with one thats steel. thats nickel plated brass and very common on defensive ammo in the us. Steel cased ammo is cheap stuff like wolf, it'll be painted or covered in a plastic to keep it from rusting.

I read about a KB using mag tech.Mag tech says not to use in the KT. Do any of you know the reason for this?

I know people shoot corbon in them without issue, I would think it would be the hottest stuff in .380. I plan on using DPX in mine when I buy it.

DPX is a great round for the P3AT. It isn't, however that "hot" of a round. In spite of the box marking +P, it really is a low pressure round. It feeds nicely, penetrates fairly well and expands...one of the few .380 rounds that do consistently.

As others have said, stay away from Wolf. I bought some, and got pretty good at clearing failure to extract/eject malfunctions. I have had no problems with Winchester White Box FMJ, Remington UMC FMJ, or Remington 102gr. Golden Sabres.

MAGSAFE & WOLF

Magsafe is said to do nasty things like kaboom, Wolf to me has just been sooo unreliable. Everything else she seems to like. But my favorite loads are Remington 102g golden sabers , DPX, and silvertips in that order. Theres some ammo out there everyone looks for called Santa Barbara thats made in Spain and is claimed to have more bark than most FMJ rounds and i have heard nothing but good thing about it but i have not tried it since its hard to get a hold of.

Magsafe - too much pressure.

Many have had trouble with extracting of steel cased ammo such as Wolf, it also wears out extractors quickly.

Quite a few have had trouble with Sellier & Bellot (hard primers).

Most other ammo seems to work well in most P-3ATs, even some of the "hotter" stuff. Even so, each gun/ammo combination can be unique. You should test your ammo choices in your own gun.

I use Federal American Eagle a lot for range practice. It is one of the hotter .380 rounds, but I've had no bad effects from it.

Before everybody ran out of it I bought a bunch of the Spanish surplus Santa Barbara TCMJ that The Amigo mentioned in his post. I've shot quite a bit of that also. It's the hottest round I've shot through my P-3AT, no ill effects with it either. I now mix it with Remington Golden Saber JHP for my carry ammo.
