Just got back from the local indoor range. Looks like all the practice ammo has gone up. I checked around and Walmart has 9mm Win 100rd boxes for $12.88 as I have seen posted on other posts. Academy has some brand called "Monarch".. never heard of it. But it is $5.86/ 50rd box. Not a bad deal. The .40 S&W in Monarch was $10 and .45 ACP is $12.74. Academy's 9mm Win in the 50rd box is $6.86/box. So, a little more than the Walmart 12.88/100rds..

Has anyone ever used Monarch? Results?

I am thinking about getting 2 to 3 thousand rounds of 9mm while it is "cheap". Not sure if that is prudent or not.

The Academy nearest me has that Monarch. It was about .30 a box more expensive than CCI Blazer, so I bought a case of Blazer instead.

There are several threads about this stuff on various gun forums. Some claim it to be made in Russia by Barnaul, others in Serbia, etc.

Loading up on ammo is never really a bad idea. But loading up on 2-3,000 rounds of a brand you've never shot may not be such a good idea.

Some guns are fickle about what ammo they will feed, fire, extract or eject. My Hi Power has yet to burp on CCI Blazer so I'll continue to feed it that.

Bluesky, welcome to THR. I buy a lot of the WWB(Winchester white box)at WalMart. I can't beat their price anywhere else, locally or online. I use the 9mm, .40 and .45acp. Is it the most accurate or cleanest burning? No. Is it very good practice ammo? In my opinion, yes. So, try a box or two in your pistol(s)and see if you like it. If you do, buy it up. Also, save your brass. Even if at this point you have no interest in reloading, that may change in the future.

Yeah, I have not been saving my brass, but I will from now on!! 9mm is so cheap, it never crossed my mind much about reloading. That could change one day. I have been shooting at an indoor range that charges by the hour. So, I never really too the time to clean up my brass. They usually go in and sweep it all up. I bet they are reloading it! I will keep the brass for .40 and .45

I bought 500 rounds of the Monarch. The guy at Academy has put 1500 rds through his G17 and G26. No problems so far.

I have put 300 rds of the Win 9mm from Walmart.. Great practice ammo! The price is right too!!

Any suggestions for reloading equipment? Maybe that is another post.. :)

Funny how you guys are talking about ammo prices. I just got back from Turners Outdoorsman and was laughing as I left store. Who in the world would pay $11.99 + tax for 50 rounds of CCI Blazer 9mm(that was the cheapest of all the brands). Then I noticed that all the ammo was at insane prices. It's Wal-mart for me. Winchester's for my 9's and Remington's for my .45/357/.38's. And yeah, picking up the brass even though you don't reload is a smart idea. I now have enough empties to justify the equipment to begin reloading this summer.

WWB in .40 is $17.86/100rds before tax @ Wally World.

CCI Blazer was $9/50rds no tax @ the Gun Show.

Guess which one I decided to try...

I've tried about 7 brands and 8 styles of bullets in my gun. I was amazed when I found the ammo that I shoot well in that gun. Turned out to be the 2nd cheapest too.:D

I have shot alot of WWB ammo from Wal Mart which used to be the best buy for me, but recently I have been shooting Blazer Brass and it has worked well for me. The Wal Marts where I live raised their price on Winchester stuff a few months back, but the CCI Blazer has been consistently the same price for a while now. I also buy ammo at Academy. Bass Pro and Cabela's prices are usually a joke unless the have a good sell.
