Ammo price question

For 62 grain green tip, the price would have to be considerably LESS than PMC 55 grain ball, or any M193 clone. "Green tip" is a poop round. Not accurate or consistent, poor terminal ballistics compared to just about everything else out there, and tears up steel targets. I've fired THOUSANDS of rounds of this garbage- enough to wear out a carbine barrel every year since '91. I've fired them next to the other stuff. Just because the military bought it doesn't make it the best thing out there.

Wolf Gold from Sportsman’s Guide, along with free shipping, is usually a good deal. About 30 cents a round delivered by buying 500.

^^This.

I don't buy green tips. They don't provide any benefit that I want, and create problems that I don't.

Green tip is probably really awesome if you're trying to chew through a cinder-block wall with 5.56 rounds.

I'm not ever trying to chew through a cinder-block wall with 5.56 rounds (or any other ammo, for that matter).

Most of the 8000 plus rounds of 5.56 I have on hand is 55gr. Around 1500 of it is 62gr green tip.

It's a combat round. You should keep some in your SHTF bag.

I have a small amount of it on hand. But if I'm in a SHTF situation where I'm trying to chew through walls with my semi-auto rifle(s), I'm probably screwed.

I don't have any desire to own any green tip, so "free" is probably the most I'd be willing to pay.

Correct! And I think it's unlikely I ever will be, and, if I ever am, it's only going to be in the kind of situation that I'm not likely to survive anyway.

Getting in a protracted firefight in an urban area is one thing when you're part of a company of soldiers or marines with fire support and medevac.... you're likely to survive that.

I'm just a civilian. The situation won't ever come up for me... and if it does, I'm probably just screwed, because I won't have a company of fellow troops or fire support or medevac for when I get punctured. Having a few more mags of green-tip won't change that.

My job, with my department, for the last five years has been dealing with evidence guns and cartridge cases from shootings. In 2017 there was a large increase in the use of 5.56/223 in shootings. The amount of AR picked up from criminals more then doubled. The bad guys are arming themselves much better these days.
If I have to protect my family from bad guys armed with ARs, I want some 62gr in my mags.
Now for target shooting and plinking I use 55gr ammo.
I have 8000 plus rounds of 5.56 and only 1500 of it is 62gr Green Tip, the rest is 55gr. Now I do have about 300 rounds of 223 55gr SP for hunting.
If you can afford it, buy it now while it’s cheap. If shooting it in an AR, buy the 5.56 NATO and not the 223 Rem.

Thanks for the replies. So if 62gn green tip is crap, what budget priced ammo do people use in a 20" 1/7 barrel? I use 55gn fmj in my carbine.
I’ve shot Green Tip 62gr out to 600 yards on a KD course at a silhouette target (B Mod). This was with iron sights and no support. I was able to keep everything in the black.
Now there is some green tip ammo out there that is not made to milspec and doesn’t shoot well. So it’s best to stay with a good brand when when buying green tip.
The lighter bullets don’t shoot as good in the 1/7 barrels as the heavier bullets, but under 100 yards you will not notice much difference.
Here’s a good deal

I have probably shot on those same ranges more than a few times Gunny. SEMPER FI. That's why I was buying the 62gn green tip. Mine were the days before carbines with optics. Something very satisfying about pinning on that Expert badge hanging below a 4th award bar.

Try nine awards:) Sempre Fi
Most of my ARs have 1/8 or 1/9 barrels and Wylde chambers. My Dissipator has a 1/7 and will shoot 55gr and 62gr just fine at 100 yards.

Nice collection. I'm a little jealous. And I sure wish there was somewhere close by that I could get on a genuine USMC range and fire the old KD course for old times sake.
Heck, I didn't even mind pulling targets for the other relays. Good times.

30 to 35 cents a round
Federal still has rebates till the 8th. .05 cents off per round.

Yep- so the price at Lucky Gunner for a 1K loose packed box would put it right at 30c per round.
