Ammo Shock!

I don't think most companies would leak info about when their prices are going to go up, although I could be wrong.

It seems, like another poster was saying, that this kind of information affects the ammo market differently (as BOXRULES proves, for example).

Good way to get a bunch of people who don't need ammo now (or were just going to buy a little) to buy up all they can afford in a panic, like a fire sale "OMG PRICES ARE GOING UP! I better stock up on ammo NOW. I'll put it on the credit card since I can't afford it right now"
Not saying there isn't a valid reason for it going up (not saying there is either) but announcing it a couple weeks in advance might get people to buy a lot now and move product quick instead of sitting on their wallets. Or maybe the store is just trying to help out it's customers with a "If you are going to buy ammo, buy it now to save a few bucks" message. I'd bet it's a little of both.

I personally believe that prices are going up at least partially because people will pay it.

I was at the local fitness store today and they raised the prices on weights almost 25% yesterday. They claim the Beijing Olympics is causing the price of weights to go up.

I don't buy it for a second. I left and went elsewhere.

People will latch onto any reason they can to raise prices. If it works and people pay... then hurrah for profits!

and the problem is that we all pay the increased price.

Look at the price of gas. Maybe originally the price increase had something to do with cost increases.... but now I'm almost sure that it's just "Hey... those stupid Americans are still buying it. Raise the price even more!!!!"

and we keep on buying.

Talk with your cash folks and we can fix some of this out of control pricing.

I would love for somebody to post the raw material metal usage for China and India over the past 5 - 10 years.

You know all that money we saved by buying cheap Chinese shoes/clothes/tools/housewares??? Well, now the Chinese are using that money to buy up all kinds of commodities (for their own industrial revolution) and to strengthen their military.

So, to summarize, we saved a little money on some cheap cra*-ola, and now we have to pay more for oil/lead/brass because China has made itself into a world power with OUR money! Oh, and we'll also get to pay more in taxes in order to help pay for our military, which will have to keep up with China's!!!

Didn't someone say prior to WWII regarding the glut of iron and steel that Japan was buying that they would ship it back to us in the form of bombs?

I've said this many times over my career:

On a global scale, Economics IS indeed Warfare. It is fought civilly, but the goals are no different.

I believe that is a paraphrase of what Herman Wouk wrote in "The Winds of War," although the sentiments were mirrored by others. One of the causes of their attack upon us was frustration over the embargoes on oil and scrap metal after their misadventures in French Indochina and China proper.

I'm Glad I Could Be A Example For You !

Sorry To Burst Your Bubbles.....

I Happen To Know Lwwolfe Personally, And If He Says His Distributors Told Him An 8-12 Percent Price Jump Is Coming, Then It's Coming. He's Not Trying To Start A Panic Buying Spree, Just Expressing The Same Frustration We All Share Over The Ridiculous Price Increases Over The Last Couple Of Years. I Have No Intention Of Running Out And Buying 10,000 Dollars Woth Of Ammo, For I Cannot Afford It. But If I Was Looking To Buy 1000 Dolars Worth In The Next Couple Of Months A 12% Jump Could Take Quite A Bite Out Of My Round Count!

So,again Thanks For The Heads Up Lwwolfe !!!!

Chupa Read At The Top Of This Page

Actually Conwict Said He Doubted The Original Info And Thought I Was An Example Of The Type Of Person Who Runs Out To Stock Up In A Panic, Therefor Driving Prices Up. I Was Just Clarifying In Case There Was Confusion On Lwwolfe's Word Or My Buying Habits !!

I Think The Only Panic Buying I Do Is Flowers For The Wife After I Realize How Much I Spent At The Local Gun Shop That Day....lol

Everything is a shock from here on out. Milk, Gas, Doctors. Precious metals, food and water. You have to stay ahead of the curve, now for sure. Reloading for the last three years has paid off. I'm stocked up. People of this planet are using up stuff before we make it. I remember when Berry's was 16.99 for 250. Now 100 Mag Techs are 17.99. The good old days are gone the race is afoot. I have been doing less expensive paper punching and more stocking up.

I'm sure there is a legit reason for SOME of the price increase.

I just think there is al element of opportunists taking advantage of the situation as well.

High commodities prices can be a good thing for the enterprising individual. Any gold jewelry you never wear can be sold to a dealer, and the profits used to buy reloading supplies. Brass scavengers know that you can turn around and sell used brass. Scrap steel, scrap copper, all that stuff that is just sitting around can be converted to cash.

High prices have also allowed old mines to become profitable again, so the supply should eventually meet demand again. Also I think that when the housing bubble burst, investors moved their money to "safe" commodities, thus bringing the price up, and making another bubble. It will eventually burst too, after the profits have been eked out of it.

Sell your scrap high, buy your reloading supplies when the prices drop again, and you can laugh when when this all happens again in the future.:D

Disclaimer: I am not an economist, so this may end up being total bullplop.

Actually to be clear I was saying "I don't think most companies [in other industries] leak price hike info."

I didn't doubt lwwolfe. I was actually discussing the "leaking" that ammo companies do in order to boost sales before their price hikes. Sorry that was unclear. I wasn't commenting on the veracity of the original post.

If you'll pay it, that's the right price. Unless somebody can make more money selling a larger quantity at a lower price. Then that lower price is the right price.

The better question is, why was the price so low before? This is especially true for gasoline. Why was the price of gas so low for so long?

Why was the price of gas so low for so long?
OPEC didn't have a good excuse to charge over $100 a barrel. The war gives them a great scapegoat. I remember a year or two ago they were saying they thought $100 a barrel was a fair price (when it was around $70ish). Last I heard $200 is a fair price according to them. I recall a news report recently where OPEC was deliberately holding back production to keep prices high. I wouldn't put it past them.
Some of it is affected by real supply issues but some of it is just charging what they can get away with, and unfortunately a lot of us can't make a living without buying fuel.

No the ammo prices are high because two dudes stole 8 tons of copper!

Ex-ammo plant workers ordered to prison for copper theft
By MARK MORRIS
The Kansas City Star

A federal judge sentenced two men to prison Thursday for stealing more than 8 tons of copper from an Independence ammunition plant.

In separate hearings, Charles Dale Osborn, 46, of Odessa, Mo., and Timothy Duane Langevin, 36, of Independence were sentenced to three years and to two years, respectively, after pleading guilty in August to conspiracy to commit sabotage.

The case was more like theft than an effort to interfere with the nation’s war effort, U.S. District Judge Howard Sachs said at Langevin’s hearing.

“This is one step worse than theft of government property, but several steps less serious than one thinks of as a sabotage case,” Sachs said.

Both men were employed by the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant and knew the copper was to be used for making more than a million rounds of small-arms ammunition. Consequently, lawyers concluded, the sabotage law applied.

According to prosecutors, Osborn began stealing copper “bullet cups” — used to manufacture copper-jacketed 7.72 mm bullets — in late September.

Langevin soon discovered the thefts and joined the scheme.

What is with new guys and zombie threads?
Do they just come climbing out of the depths of the forum looking for fresh blood or something?

:p Yet when they start a new thread on the same topic they get beat with the "Dup" stick or are told to search the forum before posting.

Seems you can't win with some folks...

Anyways ammo prices suck and should be falling....

A Little More Complicated...

Look to the depreciating dollar and world economy. Then look at our own stupid environmental legislation preventing US-based companies from re-using recycled lead, then look to the Developing World (i.e., China and any other manufacturing based developing nations).

Then look at the dealers passing rumors on gun boards, claiming to be privi to special super-secret ammo information. Like I said, this thread is total and complete BS.
