DAVEK, don't underestimate the degree of paranoia among the antigunners...and expect the current head of BATFE to be reponsive to concerns expressed to him. With Holder's record, all he needs is an excuse.

I participated in a group discussion with some anti-gunners a couple of weeks ago...they consider ANYONE who has a gun...and a lot of ammo (to them, 50 rounds is a LOT of ammo!)...as a suspicious person to stay clear of. The opinion was expressed...and generally concurred with...that ammunition sales should require registration and record of the amount purchased...and that the shooter should be held accountable for their use. Meaning that he should maintain a record of when and where each round is shot.:banghead:

Blah blah blah tinfoil hats... ;)

Time to get this thread back on track:

Just stopped by the wal mart in the calallen area of Corpus Christi, Texas and found buttloads of Federal "Champion" .45 auto.

There was so much that they piled it up neatly on the floor in front of the glass gun cabinet.

This was after visiting "The Sharpshooter" in town and finding only Blazer Brass at $30 for a box of 50. LOL!

I promptly bought 8 boxes at $16 and went home a happy guy.

A Truly Pathetic State of Affairs

So today is a day off for me, and it being Wednesday (when the Academy stores in my area get their ammo deliveries ) I got up early and was at my favourite Academy by 9mm - I mean -by 9am (sorry Freudian slip :D).

Sure enough - the shelves were loaded with Monarch brass and steel cased 9mm ammo, and refreshingly - lots of .357/.38 spl Monarch brass. Surprisingly (even though I don't shoot those calibers) lots of of .357 SIG/.40 cal were on the shelves as well. But no .45.

The supply of pistols was well stocked with SIG/Ruger/Glock/S&W/Taurus as well. I handled a new Taurus 856 (the new snubby model with 6 shots not 5) and it was a damn close call that it didn't follow me home - maybe Sunday tho :D.

So I go my nerve up and asked when the next .45 shipment was comming in. The clerk said 40 boxes (note: BOXES - not cases!!) where being processed - which meant delivery in either Friday or Monday upcoming shipment - likely Monday.

I kinda shrugged - if delivered Friday, then it would be gone by noon. But Monday is doable - my company owes me a couple of hrs personal time off and I could swing by early Monday and check in.

Isn't that pathetic? Thats what we have come down to - burning personal time to get a chance at some ammo? To me its worth it as I have seen more unicorns in my backyard than .45 boxes on display in the last 6 mos. Heck, it wasn't until last month Academy started to stock .357 on anything like a regular basis.

But this might be my only chance to see if .45ACP ammo still exists or if its a myth. Its pathetic that I have to consider using some personal time (admittedly I still have a fair bit for this year) just to feed my 1911.

I think the ammo shortage is about over.

I'm seeing lots of full shelves now.

I suspect that most of the hoarders that caused the problem have exhausted their panic levels.

Almost all of my needed SD loads are unavailable in every caliber. I have everything on backorder from Midway and Able's. I've locked up any "spare" SD rounds in the safe except for what is already loaded in the weapons, clips, and speedloaders. Can't wait for this shortage to end...it's been a real pain.

Ammo availability

Has anyone read anything that would suggest when ammo will become more readily available, when supply will catch up with demand? If so please give references.

Thanks

Man it just depends on where you live. I can't go to wally world for ammo but i can go down the road less than a half mile and buy about anything i want a at a real price. Try going to some of the smaller towns around you and see whats happen there. I do live well away from the big towns.

Hardluk -- I need to move to the NC mountains because there are very few decent rounds of SD ammo here in Raleigh. The only thing available is ball, no JHP. Even ordering online is tough -- most of it is on backorder. I might consider a special trip to the mountains just to buy some decent loads.

Arggggh! More ammo shortage crap I bet if everyone stops hyping it the demand will decrease.(I can hope can't I)

I heard around September. Just order on line and wait the 3 months or whatever and if it's free'd up sooner cancel the order. They don't usually bill until it's there to ship anyway.

On the better side, up here in Maine the local shops still have most what you want unless it is 20,000 rounds of .380 defense or somthin. There were times this spring that they limited us to two boxes a trip but the only thing that was in short supply was the .380. The primers are now appearing somewhat, you see 3 to 5 boxes of each behind the counter with regularity.

seems like the rumors keep pushing the 'expected date' back a month or two every time i hear it :D

Most places get ammo in if you are quick enough to catch it before it flies off the shelf. There is a monster of a thread dedicated to this very subject lurking a page or 2 back in the forum.

AMMO

;)Try your local gun range, sometimes they will sell you some of there stock ,sometimes they won't.
I haven't had any luck with on line buying they never seem to have any in stock,
Forget Wal-mart they laugh at me when i go into my local store.
I did get real lucky about 2 weeks ago they had 1 box of 38 spl and 1 box of 223
I bought em.
It can be a challenge but dont give up.

just picked up a box of 1000 rounds of 9mm during lunch today, got a 1000 round box of 45 ACP a few weeks ago, and i'm still finding 7.62x51 milsurplus around here so i'm ok for the foreseeable future. I'm sure i'm paying higher prices due to demand, but i'm still finding ammo. Would be nice if the prices dropped though ...

It seems the light at the end of the tunnel is almost visible. I actually bought some .357 mag yesterday at Walmart. They have had .40 for awhile and .223. I bought some .38 spl at Academy last week first I had seen in months. I hope it continues.

The shortage is over... UNTIL Obama/Biden/Pelosi open their collective mouths and say one peep about gun bans - then the panic will be back in within 24 hours.

The closer that we get to the midterms (with Democratic numbers tanking) the less likely that will be. Besides, people are hardly made of money in this economy - I don't think the resources are left over for Panic II - The Sequel.
